I need an engine brake (exhaust brake) for my 07 5. 9l dually with an auto. What is the best thing going? I am interested an an input from current users good or bad. It looks like BD and Banks have units, but are there other, and which one works the best?

The Pacbrake PRXB is the best I've seen. I'm not sure if they are available for a 07 or not. They use a air compressor instead of the vacuum pump, holds alot better.

the bd works as good as the packbrake with a fiew less parts to go bad, either one work two times better than banks or jake due to the way they controll high back pressure

I'm very happy with my normal style vacuum operated PacBrake. One day IF this original one ever does wear out I'll upgrade to the PRXB and 60lb exhaust springs, for now the standard style does well and shouldn't really be ruled out either as its quite cost effective. The idea behind the PRXB is that it maintains a somewhat even braking pressure at all rpm bands, (without using any complicated gizmos to do so) unlike my conventional one that works really well at 2000rpm - 3000rpm band but then really disappears below 1500rpm. One other point, when I dealt with PacBrake directly they treated me very well, and took the time to give me a bit of free education about their brakes, how to maintain and service them, etc. Very friendly and helpful people.

DNickisch,

I just took the U. S. Gear Decelerator off my (wrecked) 2000 truck. I don't need it on the new 2008, so I will either re-install it on my 1995 or sell it.

I was very pleased with the U. S. Gear unit. It isn't as well known as the air and vacuum operated units, but it did the job well for me. It will work on any truck with about a foot of straight exhaust pipe and a battery.

It uses electrical solenoids to control the valve. The solenoids are like the fuel shutoff solenoids, with a pull coil and a hold coil. There is a control box inside the cab and a wireless push button that signals the control box. It does require some heavy wiring (10 gauge - 25 amp), but installation is quite straightforward.

Mostly I was happy with its ability to slow the truck. I don't have any experience with the other brands, but the U. S. Gear would keep the truck and trailer below 60 mph on all but the steepest downgrades through the mountains of West Virginia and Maryland, as well as New England.

Just another brand for you to consider. From what I've read, you can't go wrong with any of them.

Good luck,

Loren
