I have a 93 CTD with 195,000 miles. In the past month, I have noticed that the fuel gauge is moving a lot more than it used to, at stop lights, etc. I know there is an electrical component that is supposed to prevent this and give a steady reading. Also, it is tending to read a lower fuel level. I am showing a quarter tank, but when I go to fill up, it only needs 10 gallons.

Any help is appreciatd.

The lower fuel level could be because of the sending unit adjusted incorrectly. I don't know what your other problem is, but I'd like to to know too. Mine does the same thing.

Float gets heavy and it reads low is one possibility.

The level is determined by a simple rheostat on the float assembly, it goes bad and does not output correct readings or it fluctuates and the smoothing algorithm is over worked.

Pull the fuel cannist and take a look, a lot of times its obvious where the problem is.
