I can't seem to get rid of the 'sticky steering ' in mine. I replaced the steering box last week with a Delphi box from Dodge. Ball joints are fine, not dry, steering stabilizer isn't hanging up. HELP! What do I try next?

I know you're frustrated. The service manual gives these 'possible cause' of sticky steering. I won't list what you have already done.



1. ) Low fluid level

2. ) Tires not properly inflated

3. ) Lack of lube in outer tie rod ends

4. ) Faulty pump contol valve (need to test the PS pump)

5. ) Excessive friction in steering column or intermediate shaft.





Check the u-joints on your steering shaft. Check to make sure they are not worn & binding.



The steering pump pressure test looks like it requires special fittings. It says the pump flow control valve is not available seperately. Must replace pump.

I would think you wouldn't have to, but have you tried backing off the over-center adjustment on the new box? Might be all you need.
 
The backoff of 1/4 turn on the overcenter is what solved my problem. A new Delphi was installed in my truck last year and had been fine, but started getting sticky and would not return to center after going around a curve. Minor adjustment/problem solved.
 
The overcenter adjustement is on top of the steering box on the very front of the box. If you are standing in front of the truck, facing the truck, look down, almost straight down the right edge of the fan cowling. You'll see the steering gear box. On top is a 5/8 nut tightened over an Allen Head bolt. I don't remember the Allen Head size. While holding the Allen Head bolt stationary (so you know where you started), loosen the lock nut with the 5/8 wrench. Move the bolt clockwise to tighten and CCW to loosen the overcenter. Mine was a CCW move to ease the tightness). The book recommends 1/8 at a time. I agree. A little can go a long way. You may want to put a mark indicating where you started in case you have a problem. The lock nut needs to be snugged good to prevent leaking.

I might give mine a small ccw and loosen it up- it sticks a little like grizz mentions his does.
