Any one out there running ESCORT for the Big Rigs? I'm thinking of it as a way to 1. pay for my truck. 2. See the US of A. Have a bit of fun while driving a CTD. Yes... I know it's a job, but beats the heck outta sitting in a office! I'm looking to get a license in VA to start off with and would like any help/info on the business side. The truck and I are ready to roll out ASAP if there is a company needing drivers now. She is lighted and ready to roll. May need a bit of signage, but I'm willing to pay for that too.

We run escorts for our own business and got our lic. out of VA and it is good for everywhere i have been with it. Call the DOT and they can tell you where to get the book that has all the states rules and regs in it. The biggest problem i have had is the oversize signs every state is different on what size they want so find the biggest you will need and go with that.

if you are talking escort oversize loads, ect... you will find, that by the rules, a full size truck is too big. I run permitted loads for our company and do use our dually as an escort, but the permits say it is too big. No scalehouse has said anything, but that don't mean you won't come across a zealot. I'll dig them up and get the real deal tomorrow AM.

I too am curious and would like all the information I could get about doing Oversize load escorting. I live in the Southeast and would like info on every aspect of the job (typical pay, vehicle requirements, good companies to work for, etc). Anyone out there who can help me out?

(BTW: I can find out the regulations by state easy enough... I am mostly interested in personal experience and what kind of money a job like this can provide).

I'm kinda curious as to why you would need a full size truck to run as an escort? Unless your actually hauling somthing and need the space I would figure you would want to use somthing that is a little cheaper to operate, I've been wrong before though. :D

Most everyone I see running escort does so in a small piece of ****, so you know the pay isn't worth a crap, hell they only give the truck driver . 35-. 40 a mile. What do you think they would give you to run in front of the main truck? Probally not enough to fill the tank and pay for your food.

I wouldn't run my new truck in the ground for nothing, not would I associate it with there company, making them look good. If you need more dough to keep the truck, get yourself a second job. If you want to run around paying escout, sell the truck and buy a Honda Insight.

Actually, the escort drivers usually get between 1. 00 - 1. 35 a mile, one way. It is not bad money for an independant. Some state require you to be approved for escorting.

If someone wants to really get into it, call Comdata and get on as an escort. They'll call you when poeple call in for an escort. They charge between 1. 35 - 1. 65 a mile and keep a little.

We run a the dually because we also tow trailers and such with it.

Between pulling trailers, and escorting, you probably could make some good coin.

A little negative don't you think? It has been my observation (limited knowledge of course) that those are the people working for somebody and not independants. I would be working for myself if this were something that I would pursue.

Not looking to "make dough to keep the truck", just weighing options and trying to gather information about the pilot car industry. It sounds like you are making assumptions...

Anybody else with some experience that can help me out? Websites and or any other information source would be appreciated to.
