I installed the Espar on my "98 12-valve. It's a chore. Most shadtree types could do it. Plan on 10 to 12 hours to do it. Love the Espar. It has failed to ignite a few times in really cold weather though. Seems to prefer #1 diesel if it's much below zero.

Espar should be able to provide you with shops that will install them in you're area if you don't want to try it yourself. Hope this helps.

Andy, learn from my experience. The Espar heater is without a doubt the most useless and extravagant purchase I have ever made. It fails so often it cannot be relied upon as an engine pre-heater. It is ridiculously expensive to purchase and install and very complicated to repair. Dealer support is the worst. Keep in mind the more gadgets you install on your vehicle, the more time you will have to spend troubleshooting and repairing them, and believe me you WILL HAVE TROUBLE WITH THE ESPAR. Its just not worth it.

Andy,

It looks as though there are many opinions on the Espar; my experience has been a good one.

It has never failed to start and when it's -50 out I use the remote start from the house, then in an hour I go and start it, works fine every time!

We also run nothing but #1 diesel for 6 months out of the year here.

I installed my Espar in January of '98 and other than a few no starts that I think are due to being caught with #2 in the tank when it has gotten sub zero, I have not had a single problem. I agree it is very expensive, but I'd spend the money again in a heartbeat. Its great coming out to a truck that is allready warm and the windows are defrosted. The only thing I've used my ice scraper for is to scoop away the heavy snow!

Love my Espar

I'm with Animal & KWentling. I have had absolutely no problems at all with my Espar heater. It worked flawlessly this winter. I would like to lengthen the fuel pick-up tube to reach further down into the tank. Less than 1/2 tank fuel, it won't fire. I installed it myself. A long job.

After checking around last winter I decided that if I ever wanted an engine heater I'd go with Webastos rather than Espar. Webastos is what most big rigs are running, they make a model for our trucks that is priced a bit lower than Espar. I would definitely check them out before deciding on which way to go, there are far more Webastos dealers nationwide than Espar.

I also have an Espar and have never had any trouble with it. It is a fairly lengthly install, but well worth it IMHO. One of the best mods I have done.
