Now that some of you have had the espars installed for a while, how do you like them?? Would you do it again? Any problems??

Thanks, Bob

had my Espar for a year. Exclt piece of equipment. Give yourself a full day for the install so you won't be rushed. I did my install in late December. I recommend an earlier time unless you have a heated workspace. I had one problem and put it on the forum, but it appears no one else had the same issue. I had an interference btween the hose coming out of the block going to the unit and the throttle linkage (96 truck). Ran some hard piping off and down side of block to clear. It is great having a warm engine and a warm truck any time you want:) :) :) :)

Love mine....

Wasn't real fond of the installation-some parts of it are pretty much a 2 man job. I agree with what araiha said about allowing yourself a full day for installation. . took me and Dad around 8 hrs. if I remember correctly.

I would put one on again in a heartbeat!

just finished install

I just finished my install so the grief is still fresh in my mind and scraped knuckles still scabbed on my hands. I haven't been softened by a winter of a warm truck, ... yet.

I documented the whole install process with a digital camera. I'm just getting started writing the story and will post it on NW Bombers when I finish.

Andy;

I had trouble with the block to ESPAR hose either hitting the fuel filter or pump linkage, too. I finally ended up using the cutoff piece of hose with a preformed 90° elbow and a ¾"coupler to get the hose up and around everything.

My mounting bracket also contacts the steering shaft. I'm going back under and adding a new bolt higher on the frame rail to hold it over and stiffen the mount.

Warm regards...

-John

Hey Bob - December first is the next meeting... check out the local chapter section for more info.

I installed my Espar in Dec. of '98. I highly recommend it. Pricey, but I'd do it again. I agree with the others on the installation. Mine was one of their first kits sold for the "98s and there were a few changes I had to make myself because of the changes Dodge had made. ( That was when I figured out the radaitor drain plug, what a female dog!)Don't know if others have experieced this, but if it gets much below -15 F mine will sometimes not start. I think it is because of me not running #1 fuel. If I know the cold is comming and have room in the tank, I have topped of with #1 and I think that cures the no start problem. Wish I had known of the remote start option when I bought. I think that would be real handy.

Thanks everyone for the info!!!

Of all things there is a guy here in Cordova who is a dealer for Espar. He sells and installs them in fishing boats. He was intrigued by the Cummins application. He offered to beat any deal that I can find. I checked with Espar and the TDR deal is not offered now. I need to do some leg work now!!!!!

John,

I will be in Anchorage 11-25 to 11-29. I won't be able to stay for the 12-1 meet. We are at the mercy of the ferry sched here!!!

Sorry

Had a D5 unit installed last week. Its not cold enough to run it in a 'real situation' a simulation had to do ; the dam thing woke me up at 4 in the morning. It sounded like a fighter jet idling on the tarmac. I wonder if the D4's are noisy also.

Well Bob has found a real good deal for us up here in Alaska, I am real tempted to get one too. I just have a couple of questions. First where does the ESPAR blow its exhaust? and does it blow black dust bunnies all over the engine compartment?? Thanks in advance.

on the 97 the exhaust goes down and along the frame under the drivers side. Also it looks the same for the 2001 altho I have not installed it yet.

2001 is the same-routes down along the left frame rail and dumps out under the truck. Air intake is down there too-not sure how that's gonna work in the snow-but it hasn't let me down yet. You'll love it-I know I love mine. Still trying to figure out a way to make all 3 memories in the timer trip on the same day-I am on call 24 hours a day when I'm working so I need to figure out some way to cycle it through the night. Guess I should drop Espar a line to see if it can be done.
