Which trans is better now?

Just filled up my new ETH / DEE for the first time. The MPG calculated out to 20. 5. I have a 3. 55 LSD. Any feedback on what other are experiencing?

2wd or 4x4? 2500 or 3500? regular or qcab? They all make a difference.

Yes, I drive over 50. I typicall drive around 60 MPH on my way to work except for the red lights. My 2000 5-speed would average 22. 5 back and forth to work. I do not have a heavy foot and have been acused of being a papa.

I haven't gone through a whole tank yet, but I filled up after 107 miles (was draining the fuel out of the old truck to get the 60 gal tank out of it), and estimate I was getting in the high 9 mpg range.

Mine's a 2001. 5 ETH/DEE 3500 4x4 with 4. 10's.

<sigh> I need an overdrive.

The mileage will get better as the miles are put on the engine and it "loosens up" a little. I keep track of my MPG at every fill up and in 7 tanks of diesel being used here are my average MPG per tankful.

1. -----17. 3 MPG
2. -----17. 6 MPG
3. -----18. 7 MPG
4. -----18. 9 MPG
5. -----19. 0 MPG
6. -----18. 3 MPG
7. -----19. 1 MPG

For consistency in fill ups, I always run the truck until the fuel light comes on and then about 30 or 40 miles after that. My driving is about 60% freeway at speeds of 60 to 70 MPH will the cruise control engaged as much as possible. The other 40% is uphill and downhill and some flat stretches in what could be considered city type driving.

Being how I have the 4. 10 rear axle ratio, I feel that my mileage is great. I might also add that I try to shift on level ground at around 1600 RPM's and when I'm on the hills I run it to about 2000 RPM's. All of my MPG calculations are made by using a calculator and not the trip computer, as it reads about . 5 to 1. 0 MPG less than I'm actually getting.

I hope someone can use my truck as a stock benchmark to make their own comparisons.

14. 55, but I've been varying my RPM's and shifting a lot on the first tank to present trying to facilitate break in w/o lugging a new motor... besides... it just sounds better @ 2,200rpm, NOT TO MENTION THOSE 3. 55's and 6th TAKE YA PLACES FASTER AT THAT RPM.

Hey,

I have about 15K on my truck now. I havn't towed anything yet to help with the break in but I am getting about 22 mpg. That is with about 60/40 to 70/30 highway to city driving. I have seen a gradual but very slow increase over time. The first tank was the only tank below 20 mpg.

I'm getting about 30. 6 mpg, heading straight down hill, with a following wind, and an ambient temperature of 30 degrees celsius. Heading straight up hill, with my 305 pound neighbor, Bubba "moonpie" Flannigan, riding shotgun and my backhoe in tow, I'm getting about 6. 235 mpg. About 12. 875% of my driving is "highway," 18. 256% is stop'n'go city, 13% off-road, 11% parking lot maneuvering, . 02% fording streams with a greater than 10" depth, 8% transiting pastures frequented by sheep, 9% on pothole-riven toll roads, 13% in foreign countries (Mexico/Canada), and the rest at the local drag strip. I guess my average fuel economy is in the range of 16. 75 mpg, like everyone else, but I hope the above has been helpful.

My 2001. 5 3500 4x4 4. 10 ETH/DEE Qcab averaged 18. 5mpg on it's first trip from Idaho to CA. varing speed from 55mph to 70mph. I've had the truck for five weeks now and my estemated city/hwy mileage is 16. 9mpg average with 60 to 65mph hwy speed. So far I'm very happy with the performance and mileage.

I shouldn't admit that I even know this, but my overall average is 18. 1 mpg calculated over 18,000 miles of driving. That contains a mix of just about every kind, but I will say that more of it was at below 70 mph than was above. At just a hair over 60, I easily break the 20 mpg mark, but I have ceased driving that speed because it makes me a hazard to the other drivers in this neck of the woods. At 68 to 70, probably about 19 mpg, at 75, probably only 17. 5 mpg but most tanks still have enough secondary roads to bring the overall tank average up over 18. After watching the mileage on EVERY tank, I have to agree with several of the points made by Sasquatch (and I liked the humor), every variable makes such a difference that tank-to-tank comparisons are really suspect. These trucks are big and tall, and I find that even when I control factors like filling the fuel up the neck from the same fuel pump, other factors like minor tailwinds/headwinds/that traffic jam/how much you ran the AC etc will cause a significant swing in the "one tank" numbers, above or below my more general averages. But if you got 20. 5 on a first tank (before break in), you'll probably see some really good numbers on down the road.

2001. 5, 3500 ETH/DEE, 3. 55. Got 17. 9 on my first tank. Mostly city, not really driving for economy either. I was quite pleased.

OK,
My first tank(all in-town miles) was 17. 4 with stock tires and exhaust etc. I calculated it with a calculator and NOT the on-board.
My next tank should be better or worse, I now have my 35" tires and 4" exhaust installed. If I can keep my right foot out of the firewall the mpg 'might' go up however with the new exhaust it will be VERY difficult. #ad

No wonder your milage sucks. you probably spend 20% of your fuel idling and trying to figure out how many percents it took to figure out this thread?? #ad

I forgot to mention - I really did once got 74. 9 mpg on the trip computer, for the overall average of the first 7 miles after leaving the gas station. That's the highest number I've ever seen on the "Average economy" readout, and it was a real thrill to an mpg freak like myself. Unfortunately, I got to the bottom of the hill, and my average did not hold... #ad
