Most of you have probably read my post about my 01 whine/howl. Since there are more and more ETHs being own I have to ask a question. How many ETH/DEE owners recognize a high pitched whine from their engine when decelerating? This is noticeable in all gears between 1600rpm to 1000rpm. More noticeable when in town driving and the drivers window is open. any help would be appreciated.

No whine at all, just the turbo. I can hear the timing gears at shutdown if I listen carefully. I am quite sure that is what is wrong with your truck, Michael, one of the timing gears was not cut at the correct pitch or something and doesn't mesh properly.

Vaughn

No whine, Michael. I was hoping by now all your problems were solved. Haven't heard from you in a while. Good luck.

Michael,
A little loud on a "cold" morning (according to the neighbors), but no whine. Hope you are able to find the answer soon! Keep us posted.
Mark

Sue's 01 ETH does not have a whine or howl. It does have a "moan", which appeared after we installed a PacBrake, in the 1200-1800 rpm . My 94 with a PacBrake also has this moan, which is much lower in pitch than a turbo whistle and varies in pitch with the turbo speed. In both of our trucks, I think that the little bypass hole in the brake butterfly acts like a whistle and resonates in the exhaust system or turbine housing. Any one else with an exhaust brake noticed this??

No whine. Sounds like you have two whines, the engine and the dealer. Good Luck.

My ETH makes not different noise than any other diesel, I hope you figure it out.

I have a whine, but I hear almost all the time especially was it is idling. A little touch of the gas makes it louder. It is louder when is colder. I can see that not everyone has this noise. Do I dare take it to the dealer??????

I appreciate the input. The sound is similar to a blower whine on a top fuel funny car. This is the best description I can give. Im going to Cummins in Portland the 26th and have them go for a ride. Naturally this will be out of my pocket unless they have pull with DC. Last time I was at Cummins in Coburg and they were very expliciate about how they couldnt touch it under DCs warranty.

I have only heard mine whine, (like You describe), one morning that it was about 5 deg. and the engine was not totally warmed up yet. Come to think of it, I guess I was whining about the temp. too. #ad

Haven't heard it since.

I think I know the whine that everyone is questioning and in my opinion it is just normal gear noise from the transmission upon deceleration. The engine also is a contributing factor because when there is no load being put on the engine and your foot is off the pedal, the compression of the engine helps to slow the whole truck down. Of course this only applies if you have a manual gearbox. I think the whine sounds kinda cool, gives me that big rig feeling!!

BN, My truck has the same noise as Mike's, but not as bad. It is not in the trans. It is most evident between 1000 and 1800 rpm or so. It is not as bad during acceleration, and doesn't make a difference which gear you are in. It is the same if sitting still in neutral, clutch in or out, makes no difference. I have removed the serpentine belt and run it briefly, eliminating the alt, water pump, ps pump, ac comp, noise is still there. It is in the front of the motor. As far as I can tell, it may be the cam drive gears but I think it more likely the gears driving the Bosch fuel pump. My truck only has 2600 miles and I first noticed the noise at 1000 miles. Of course dealer said it was "normal 24v engine noise".
It really is annoying.

Ram4sam,thats the same symptoms as my truck. Also the same area. I do not I repeat do not feel this is a "normal" sound!Mike Clay has a 01,same date of manufacturer, made in Mexico ,purchased 2 weeks before mine, identical in all options to mine. His does not howl/whine.

Micahel, have you ever done an oil analysis? If the timing gears are causing the noise, which I suspect they are, then maybe they are not meshing properly and wearing faster than normal. I would have an oil sample analyzed just to see if your iron count is high, that should count for something if in fact you do get a high iron count.

No whine in mine.

Mine so far has no whine in it, but the other day the dealer gave me a new one as a loner for the day and after driving it for a few miles I thought of this thread and the whine issue, it had it!! Pete

Vaughn,I agree with what your saying. If youve been reading my other post on this subject youll know that DC is being "noncommittal" about this being normal or not. The thing I have been after for 6 months is this. If its not normal, fix it. If it is normal, give me a reasonable explanation as far as what Cummins changed to create this noise. So far I have gotten neither and judging by this poll it seems that at least a couple of members have the same problem. Thanks for the information from all of you. I will try to get to Cummins NW in Portland,Or the 26th and see what the come up with.

The only Loud whine is the Neighbors since my resonator fell off #ad
... I do have a light whine in my Cummins but I think it is my Cummins Diesel Purring #ad
