Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) coolant leak

Anyone had their evaporators freeze up?

My AC works good for like 10 minutes then it will stop blowing through the vents, but if i turn just the fan on it will start blowing through after about 5 minutes. When the Air flow stops the low side lines have ice all over them.

I was thinking it was probably an orface tube, but my pressures run normal!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

sounds like you got a real problem there. have you cleaned the condenser coils. I found on the little bottle for the blowbye when not cleaned out regularly blows oily air around the engine compartment getting all over the radiator, oil cooler ETC. Then dust sticks to it. Making heat transfer harder. I spray mine off with a pressure sprayer.

Or the cap tube is partially plugged screwing up your cycle.

or a low charge.

Hook up your pressure gauges and watch them with ac on see how low your low pressure gauge is going. You may have a restriction somewhere in the system or a cycle switch that's not working properly not disengaging the compressor. I can't remember what type cycle system you have and would have to look it up.

Is the system R-14 or is it converted to R-134? I've seen where systems been converted and you have to adjust the cycle-low pressure switch or replace it so the compressor will cycle off at a higher pressure to avoid freeze up.

Take Bills advice & check the refrigerant level, also if you are low... get the leak fixed (properly, see previous post about evaporators).

low on refrigerant...

had a refridgerator that did the same thing... a little shot of freon fixed it right up.

too cold

Adjust temp up a tad, run unit in fresh mode. You will not get as cool as before but you will not ice up the evaporator & have to get hot waiting for it to thaw out. When all else fails have the thermostat checked out.
