So the owner's manual comes right out and says it - this truck has a black box and will gladly tell everyone if you were doing anything improper before your airbags went off. Did anyone notice this in the manual for their '06? I was curious if I was lucky enough to be in the first group of test subjects for this inspired feature.

Airbag equipped vehicles have had crash data recorders since the late 80s or early 90s. Depending on the vehicle, they typically record the G-forces and various pcm inputs/output states for the few seconds prior to and after airbag deployment. I know my 97 cadillac has one, and I am quite sure my mom's 88 mercedes has one too. Mostly they're used by the NTSB if an airbag FAILS to fire and the accident obviously warranted it.

I read several years ago about a guy going to jail for manslaughter after killing 2 girls as they were backing out of their driveway in a 25 mph zone. He told the cops he was doing 50mph, but the airbags said 105.

Corzine (NJ govener) just had a crash, his GM had this data recorder. In fact they knew his truck was going 98 mph at the time of the crash.
