oops!

Neighbor's dog came over to my yard and bit my friends 3 year old daughter right through the right eyebrow. Took eight stitches.

Doing the right thing, while at the hospital, I called the sheriff's office. They came out, contacted the dog's owner, wrote them a citation, and required the dog to be quarantined for 10 days. Dog owner complied.

Dog was classified as 'vicious'. Owner was given rules for controlling a vicious dog. Pen it, or muzzle while leashed or chained. Not to run free. They never muzzled the dog and did not have a pen for it.

The dog broke it's leash and made a beeline to my yard. First time it did this, we contacted the sheriff's dept. They came out and contacted the owner. We were told the animal control deputy would pick the dog up. Didn't happen.

Dog broke it's new leash yesterday for the second time. Beeline to my yard. Another neighbor with small children called sheriff. They never came out.

Dog died from a 9mm silvertip hollow-point last night.

Growing up in the country, I can't honestly say how many dogs I've had to put down due to ferral nature. Neighbors were about a mile away, didn't really matter if it was one of thier dogs or strays dumped, they didn't survive if we caught them in the sights. We raised high dollar bird dogs back then, along with a few muts to do the protection part, and they would try to get in with the bird dogs. We also had to contend with packs of coyotes and coyote mixes.

Morph.

I had a neighbor that lived on an adjoining farm that had a herd of potlickers. Every night they would chase our cows. I called and called and called and all he would do is deny they were his dogs. I knew they were so, out came the spotlight and the . 308. He had 15 or 16 of them that he fed in his barn and kept around all the time. I killed 9 in one night after calling him and telling him I was fixing to start shooting them. People need to be more responsible for their animals. I've had to kill 3 dogs since buying the farm I own now. They were strays that showed up and started chasing my mules. The mules got one of them or I would have had to kill 4. My ex-brother-in-law killed a few dogs that were chasing his cows with his . 338 Ultra mag he uses for Elk hunting. He had to haul them off on his own and bury them. I wasn't touching what was left. Nasty.

You did the right thing. I love dogs but. I shot one several years ago. It was a stray in heat:eek: I had try-ed several times but it would always run off before I could get a shot. Got home from work one morning(work nights)had my Lab/Golden Ret tied on the back porch to keep him from running with her. Looked out the back door and she was there. Got my 22mag and walked around the house and there she was. My Lab was already hung up:D (did not have it in me to shoot her while he was humping her)so I let em go. Next morning I come home and she was on the back porch again. I run around there with 22mag and she takes off running. I got her about 50yds from the house on a run:D End of story.

My ex-mother-in-law had problems with a neighbor's dog harrassing her miniature horses - but one of the horses kicked the dog in the head and solved the problem for her. Jumbo, I think you did exactly the right thing, after exhibiting more than enough patience.

My parents had a vacation house in upper NY state.

The farmers didn't tolerate dogs messing with they're livestock. That was their livelihood.

Shoot first ask questions later.

Lots of coy-dogs (coyote dog mix) up there too.

If a dog attacks a kid, it dies right there. I've come close to shooting the neighbor's dog. They live a 1/4 mile down the road and have a large dog (150-160 lbs) that they let run all over the place. It likes to come down to my house at night, sit outside my bedroom window, and bark its fool head off. I picked it up one night (that's how I know how much it weighs), threw it in the back of my truck, drove it several miles away and dumped it, figuring it wouldn't find its way home. Wrong! I've shot at it scaring it away, but it always comes back. I don't have the heart to kill it 'cause its some family's pet.

When I lived in Ohio a number of years ago a co-worker in Mount Vernon, Ohio shot the neighbor's dog because it sat in his yard barking and howling all night. As a reward for his frustration, he spent 30 days in the Knox County Jail. :(

Personally I would have shot the dog the first time he bit my kid, regardless of what the cops said. Probably would have done it in the owners yard, that way I wouldn't have to clean it up (if it were my kid).

If you have a dog hanging around your house that wont go away (Jeff Clark) try this.

Walk out there with a big paintbrush soaked with turpentine. Be nice to the dog, maybe give him a bit of a hot dog. Then paint his butthole with the turpentine. Be aggressive.

I've never seen it done, but my grandfather said that's the easiest way to make sure a dog will never return to your yard. He will remember that FOREVER.

Or you could shave/paint a target on the side of the dog. I think the owners would get the hint after they saw their dog with a bullseye on his side.

My grandfather had a dog that kept getting in his garbage at night so finally he somehow hooked it up to electricty. That night the dog came by and I guess the first thing he did was hike his leg to **** on the can, that was the last time the dog came around. Problem was it was late at night so after my grandfather heard the dog get zapped he just went to bed, early the next morning the garbage man came by, lets just say he wasn't too happy.

Really though, make sure you shoot them on your own property. If you shoot them on their property, you have no proof (unless somebody got bit) that they were ever there. It makes things easier when you have to go to court over it. This is what the game and fish warden and county sheriff told me. We have a problem neighbor now that lets his dogs run loose. They chase neighbors horses and run for home as soon as they see anybody. Nobody's got a shot off yet. They don't come to my yard, but I'm ready when and if they do. The big stink about the whole thing is the owner is a sheriff's deputy in town. Not just his dogs but other problems as well. Makes me lose respect for LE. I feel sorry for the dogs, they don't know any better. Sometimes I feel like the owner should be the one who's shot.

Neighbors dog ran up to the fence as the wife was pulling into the yard. the dog was barking and grawling, the wife was too afraid to get out her vehicle. She tells me about it. I sit out one night with my pellet gun(you should seee my pellet guns), here comes woofie. When he came into my yard barking, I stood aimed at his package, and fired. The howl woke the dead. I have not seen that dog around anymore. I wonder why? ;) ;)

no dog troubles, but I too am being overrun by the idiot neighbors cats, lots of muddy skidmarks on the windshield of the truck from the cats ski ing down off the cab.

bought a Havahart trap and keep it in the bed of the truck and bait it every night before going to bed, animal control center is on my way to work, I drop them off there, entirely legal and I don't have to worry about disposing of a carcass.

THE FORD GUY Oo. Oo. Oo.

Growing up, my neighbors had a pack of dogs that would chase our stock. Mom never would let me shoot them when she was home, so I took to shooting them when she wasnt home. The husband said "kill em all, it'll cut my dog food bill. " Wife was total opposite; bleeding heart, liberal BI#CH. THen the one dog started barking and nipping at me as I'd walk out to the bus, and that was that. I drove the pickup to the end of the driveway one AM, had a . 45 with me. When the dog came running at me, I shot him in the head. THrew the carcass in the ditch as the bus got there, and got on. She asked a few days later if I had seen the dog lately. "No I havent seen him lately, but if I do, I'll let you know. "

Had a cow (Brahma/ Brown Swiss) that got mad at another dog (same neighbors) that was barking at her calf. She put her head down and charged 50 feet to him, threw him 20 feet through the air, and he landed in a heap, her hot on his tail. He ducked under the hot wire, and she stopped. Dog never went back in that pasture for 10 years.

If a dog bit my kid, I'd have a hard time stopping at shooting just the dog. I take it as a personal insult that you cant keep your danged mut on your property (not to mention it is just rude to neighbors to let your dog run loose). I keep mine at home; you should do the same. There is NO excuse for a kid to get bitten by a dog, no matter the case. I'd shoot the dog, then haul its body to a ditch 10 miles away, and dump it for the buzzards. Keep the sheriff out of it, unless you think the neighbor can pay the cops enough to cause you any trouble.

Jeff Clark- if the family really cares about the pet, they'll keep it at home. THey might learn a lesson in ettiquite, though it is doubtful

Speaking of the devil

Our neighbors dog attacked our dog this spring. Our dog was in front of are place when this happened. It cost us 175 to fix our dog back up. Cheap compared to a human getting fixed up. Our neighbor only payed 1/2 wich really tissed me off. So the gun is always on stand by.

Well next week I caught that same dog chasing a chipmunk underneath my vehicle. That dog was ripping wires and other stuff my vehivle. He was warned a secound time. He didn't know what to do. We said watch your dog. It will be shot down if it steps over the line.

I have not seen that over here since. Get this the vets have boarded this same dog several times before my neighbor took owner ship.

I for one will not own a dog that is a liability.

It was right for you too shoot that dog. If that dog would have done serious damage. It would have gone to court. Then would have ordered it to be destoyed . Then the neighbor would have had to pay the doctors bill. Then be fined on top of that. I consider what you did was preventive maintenance. A mans gotta do what mans gotta do.

A number of years ago, I noticed strange muddy footprints in the kitchen and seemed to be going through a lot of cat food. Turns out a large* raccoon was coming in the house and freeloading. Shooting was out of the question, as this was right in San Francisco, but I did end up nabbing the beast with a borrowed live trap a couple days later. *(weighed 46 pounds including cage on the bathroom scale)

Borrowed my buddies truck, took the critter to work, figuring I'd release him in the woods away from the city a bit.

But first I made a call to the local county Animal control to see if there was a better option. The conversation went something like this:

ME: I've got a large angry raccoon in a box, can you come pick him up?

AC: How did he get in the house? You should keep doors and windows closed, (insert much scolding, blah blah blah), but No, we do not pick up raccoons.

Me: So you won't come pick him up?

AC: Is the animal sick?

Me: No.

AC: Is the animal injured?

Me: No.

AC: Then we can't pick him up, and you're responsible for the welfare of the animal.

Me: Do you pick up dead animals?

<Short pause>

AC: Yes, we do.

Me: Call you right back...

Happy ending, the raccoon made it to the woods, and I didn't have tail for my antenna.

I just bought 10 acres and the house across the road has a dog that likes to charge across the street all full of **** and vinegar. I was out picking up some cans and bottles on the edge of my property when he charged me once. I stared him back, but i was a little nervous, it is a pretty good sized dog, and i didn't really feel like climbing one of the trees to get away. I hate animals that dont stay in their own yards. I haven't pushed the issue yet with the neighbors, as my house wont be complete for the better part of a year, but once i'm ou there, all bets are off for fido. I am going to start packing the . 40 sig when i go check on progress of the house. I can gaurantee one thing, first time that mutt comes around when i have my 3 year old with me, hes gonna die a quick death.
