Anyone had problems with the temperature readings on the EVIC jumping 15-20 degrees? I have a 2018 Tradesman with less than 4000 miles and my oil temperature will ease up to 195 and then drop to 180 and slowly go back up. I’ve had no other problems or issues. Would disconnecting the batteries cause any problems? I’m green as a gourd on these Ram trucks. First time I’ve ever been in one. Any clues? Thanks

Thanks SnoKing. I searched all over for something like that. Glad to know I don’t have a problem. Thanks again.

Yeah those virtual gauges are useless. I wonder why they even bother. I may check on some real mechanical gauges for mine, but FCA might void my warranty for tampering with it. Lol and crying at the same time.

Oil temp on this engine is as useless as rhe pressure gauge.
As it has an oil/water heat exchanger this two temperatures stay always very close together.
And if the oil pressure drops below a certain point it gives a warning.

As long as the truck is stock there is simply no need for this two values.

Just got back from 2k mile trip. I checked the oil temp quite a few times by measuring at the front section of the oil pan. It was actually very close to the fake reading on the EVIC. I tended to check it when it was reading cooler or warmer than the coolant temp.

My 05 had an aftermarket oil temp and oil pressure gauge. The dash oil pressure is a joke... the oil temp is fairly close while driving/towing. It's not very accurate in stop/go and low temp operation.

Mine is a 2018. Where would be the best place to install the oil temperature sensor? I would think in the pan but that would require a boss being installed. Does the CTD have an external oil cooler? I’ve tried to look but I can’t tell. Maybe tap into a cooler line?

SnoKing,
That’s exactly what I was looking for. Now I know it’s all internal and the temp swing on the EVIC is an issue with that and not the cooler itself. Thanks again.
Great article

There are a couple ports on the oil filter head... but having ran an oil temp gauge in the past on a decently modded rig I won't spend the money again, it really isn't needed on these. Put the money towards good synthetic oil, as it deals with higher oil temps better.

I’m using Rotella T6 15-40. It got up to 205 oil temp today pulling my TT and soon as I got off the interstate it dropped to 165. It sure sounds good in these east Texas hills getting 21-23 lbs of boost @ 68 mph and 1500 rpm.

Those rapid temp drops are what isn’t realistic.

I found that unloaded oil was 10-15° above coolant. Towing it was 20-25° above coolant.

At any load it was slow to heat up and slower to cool down.

My TT only weighs 7K and temperature was in the 50’s. Oil temperature was running around 15 degrees warmer than water temperature. Oil pressure stayed right on 49 lbs @ 1500 rpm. I know it’s not actual but got to have something to go by. Definitely going to look at getting some real gauges.
This thing really is a beast. Got around 11 mpg in a pretty good head wind.

There isn’t any reason to go by it, it’s not even a modified actual temp signal. There isn’t a pressure sender anywhere on the motor, just a 6psi switch. So you either have 6 psi or you don’t.

Coolant and trans temp are real accurate, watch those. Or tire pressure.
