Good luck
I did this job on my 96. It is a bear of a job. I am a novice so take it for what its worth. On my 96 one of the steps is remove dashboard!!!! I worked out of the shop manual and haynes manual and did most of the work by myself. You will need the basic tools plus refrigerant line coupling tools. You can get these at most auto parts stores for about $10. You will also need constant tension hose clamp tools $10 at Harbor freight. Those tools will save you half a day.
Helpful hints
You dont have to completely remove the dash from the truck, when you get most of the electrical plugs disconnected roll the dash up and over the steering wheel resting it on top. Support the passenger side of the dash on a jack stand in the passenger side floor board. Also use a jack stand to support the steering column which has to be loosened. Then you can pull the heat ac unit out.
Use mopar parts (mopar4less.com) on big items-core. Dont pay $9 for an o-ring at stealer. you can buy them by handful at Harbor freight for cents.
Be careful with vaccum lines ,leave them attached as much as possible-label everything you disconnect with tape. Take your time because there are so many cheap delicate things to break on that unit and they are pricey. Its a time consuming job. I saved about $500 doing it myself. Stealer wanted $1,000 .
When you get it all together have it evacuated and filled by a pro. this should not cost more than 50 bucks. it takes a set of manifold gauges and a vaccum pump.
