Exhaust brake activates while under power

01, 2500 Ram TD with 100K, 5spd. Installed Banks Ex brake 4 years ago along with Stinger System, has been a good running truck. Recently I have experienced a brief and periodic power drop when powering up like when entering the freeway. The engine flutters and the boost drops to zero. After a sec or two the power returns and it runs great. This only happens when the exhaust brake is on. It actually feels like the brake activates at 50-60 mph under power. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Do you have gauges? the EGT will rise quickly if it is closed. It could be that if you use the brake before entering the on-ramp, it is slow to come off the closed position. Sticky shaft or a sticky solenoid. Might be time for servicing both. Just turn it off when your not using it.

Thank for the reply. I'll watch for a rapid rise in EGT next time this occurs. After 4 years of always being in the on position it probably could use some servicing. I read pros and cons about leaving the e-brake on but I like your recommendation of leaving it off when not needed. I think I'll only use it when towing my fiver etc. I got real dependent on the e-brake especially living in the Sierra foothills with lots of downhill stretches. I really don't benefit from it that much unless I'm towing or carrying a load. Thanks again, Mike

What brand of e-brake is it? I had similar problems with my PacBrake, and it took several months of trial-and-error and getting parts tested by them to sort it out. It works now, although we never did get a definitive answer. Best guess is that it was due to a sticking solenoid and a controller box gone bad. They might cover it under warranty, although you will need to stay on them; in my case I got a different answer every time I called.

So I had some issues with mine a while back and I called banks. They are extremely helpful. As it turns out the problem was in the connection at the apps. And the apps.

What the tech told me is that the banks computer reads the voltage from the apps at Key on engine off. Then it needs to see that again to engage the brake. I think its something like . 5 volts to engage.

So I had the brake not come on and determined it to be the connection. I soldered it.

I also had the brake engage a a very light pedal. I could hear the relay clicking under the dash. That turned out to be a bad apps.

Thanks for the feedback. I will check connections at apps. and actuator control valve. I removed the airbox recently for cleaning and during the process may have snagged the wires coming off the actuator valve. It's guys like you that make TDR such a great resource, thanks again.
