Suppose you are on a trip and an oil change or fuel service is recommended by the EVIC and you need to drive a few hundred miles or more to get home.
Will the computer do anything to limit the power (limp mode) or trigger a check engine light, or is it just an advisory and nothing will happen if you keep driving?

I had that happen on my '12. I was 600 miles from home when the light came on and I drove all the way home without problems before I changed it.

Nothing will limit power, it's just an advisory. But you should change it within 500 miles of the message. Just use a little common sense, and try not to exceed the 500 too many times. The 6.7 will sludge up really bad if the changes are exceeded by a long way and often.
If you do oil analysis you can use that as your guide instead.

Since we are on the subject. I only recently noticed that my fuel filter life has dropped to 7% yet I changed it and reset the meter just under 5000 miles ago. My assumption is that this occurred with the 8AN update that happened just over a month ago (I didn't even check it until last week) as I've heard others mention an update messed up the fuel filter life readings.
Does this matter? I had just planned on ignoring it and to just watch the "miles since reset" numbers and change it then (or at 6-months). Will this matter?

It won't matter.
I had various updates performed July 31st, and they, too changed my fuel filter life percentage.
My oil life was not affected.
I opted to run the same mileage interval as my oil life mileage (miles since reset).
After the percentage went to zero (mind you I'd still had plenty of miles left) I did receive a message along the lines of "Fuel system service required. Please see dealer."
After reaching my desired mileage, I went through the re-set procedure for the oil life and fuel filter life. They re-set without issues. The message "Fuel system service required. Please see dealer." continued for a few startups afterwards, but I re-set the fuel filter life a couple more times, and it eventually went away.

This message will however abort a remote start and then set a check engine light for remote start aborted due to stored message for "Change fuel filter(s)". Ask me how I know. On my truck you cannot remote start it with a stored service message even if the message itself doesn't set a check engine light. It will remote start, then shut down, and on my truck when I manually started it after that I got a check engine light. I didn't get the code but it didn't clear fast enough for me so I stopped by and got my service guy to reset it.
