I wish I could claim credit for this but I saw it in the current issue of Progressive Farmer mag. Get a socket that will fit your drain plug, in the case of our Cummins we could use a F 1/2 drive to a M 3/8 drive adapter. Weld it on to a 1" by 1/8" flat bar with the 3/8 drive pointing straight up. Bend the ends of the flat bar to fit the inside slope of a funnel and bolt it in place. Use your normal 3/8 drive to loosen the oil drain plug and then use the funnel, flat bar, socket combination to finish removing the plug. When the plug comes out the socket will hold the plug and the funnel will catch the oil. No oil on your hands or the floor and the plug will be held and not dropped into the catch pan. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Sorry to shoot holes in it but...

It sounds like a good idea except that you would have to hold the funnel there until the oil stopped draining because the oil would run down the outside of the funnel if you go to remove it from the oil flow from the pan. Quite possibly your hands would get even oilier than just removing the plug. Guess you could rig something to hold the funnel up though. Another downside is the funnel is just one more thing to clean oil off of.

I don't know about others but I only totally remove my plug after the oil has drained to clean it before retightening. Just a couple turns loose and it drains fast enough.

I know someone is going to say why don't you just buy an oil drain valve from Geno's? I personally don't like the idea of a valve that could accidentally open and drain my engine while it's running.

My '02 did not come with the ported drain plug. I have no choice but wrap my arm around the oil pan , twist my hand until I feel the "click" of the threads then roll it out of the way. Still eaiser than the 'ol lady's mustang, that I can barely get the catch pan under, let alone my arm in a convienent place.

Its all about timing and quick reflexes. With that combo you will never get a drop on you,

;) Kind of like trying to kiss a ducks a$$ and not get feathers in your mouth... . Not that I have ever tried, but I heard you have to blow and kiss, but you gotta be fast ;) ;) :D :D

I just use the quick valve in Genos and a pan that holds al the oil. The quick valve has a reduced flow so the black pan that is sold at parts places can take the flow amount without overflowing. No mess on my hands and the valve has been on for 2 yrs with no trouble

Also, as to response to fears in a post above... there is no way for the valve to acc. open as it is spring tentioned and has a index recess for the blade of the valve handle to slip into. Never has opened or leaked a bit.

I noticed this also. The oil pan threads on the 2002's do not have the four little slots in it to let the oil drain as soon as you crack the plug. Now when I get the plug just about loose, I have to remove the plug REAL quick so as not to get an oil bath.
