Hope someone can give me a hand. I installed stage 1 DDP injectors, timed it to 16 degrees, adjusted the valves and now I have black smoke when taking off or shifting before boost kicks in. Max boost is 26. I've tried to adjust the star wheel but it does not seem to decrease the smoke. Truck runs great, I just don't want the black smoke. Can anyone give me some suggestions. Thanks Tony

16 degrees was within the acceptable range for my pump, granted it was on the upper end. I thought retarded timing would produce more smoke. I really don't want to have to retime it as I don't have the tools and will need to bring it to the dealer as I did before.

how badly is it smoking?? do you have a fueling plate or a slid stock plate or just the injectors? i would imagine that even ddp stage 1 injectors would make a little smoke. actually advancing the timing will make the smoke a bit more "black" you could say, but 16* of timing will not increase the smoke. i have yet to see a 12v B engine, even stock that does not smoke alittle bit, it just the nature of that engine. if you plate is moved forward, then you may have to slide it back to get rid of the smoke. if you can elaborate alittle bit mroe on your truck setup, and maybe that can help us determine what you need to do to get rid of the smoke.

Thanks for your replies. I had a #8 tst fuel plate in along with the ddp-1's and I removed it thinking it was the plate causing the smoke. Now I'm back to stock plate with ddp-1's. After reading hundreds of posts I now realize the plate really does not come into play until wot or near wot. No other modifications to the truck. I realize some smoke from a 12 valve is normal but mine is excessive when taking off/shifting @low boost levels (at least in my mind). In fact that's why I chose small injectors for an upgrade from ddp.

make sure that your AFC housing is slid all the way back tworads the fire wall too, if that is forward, that will contribute to some low end smoke, make sure that the star wheel is turned back in tworads the fire wall, turn the wheel clockwise, that will put spring tension the diaprham, and the more spring pressure, the more boost is needed to overcome the spring tension, this should eliminate the smoke at the low end. other than that, there isn't that much more that you can do to control low end smoke.
