Drove a bit over the Mem. Day weekend and noticed that my tailgate and shell window were getting covered with oil. When I stopped and looked underneath, I noticed a steady dripping of oil from the vent tube. I checked the oil level, and it was fine (I had just changed the oil & filters). So I smelled the dipstick to make sure that a sticking injector wasn't "refilling" the crankcase with fuel. No smell.

Today, I checked underneath (after court... to prosecute a trespassing queer at a school - see "POLITICS" thread) and it's still dripping.

But at a different angle (and with no wind), the drip comes from near the vent tube - not the drip tube itself. By collecting a little of the drippings, I see that it is RED > ATF. One of the metal straps intended to secure the transmission lines going to/from the front cooler had worn a hole in one of the lines and started to wear the other. I fixed it with some leftover Belzona, a split pipe, and 2 hose clamps.

Thank goodness for the MagHytec Double Deep pan; I had pumped out about 2 gallons (of the 4. 5 gal. capacity) of the entire ATF. Drained & Changed all.

The point: make sure of what is leaking, and where it is leaking from. This misdiagnosis could have cost me my DTT transmission. I thought it was threatening my Cummins engine.

I replaced mine with hydraulic hose from a hose with crimped swivel fittings on the transmission side. In the process, I also got ride of the fluid heater on the exhaust manifold side of the block.
