Exh. Brake does not work after making a stop

Hi Guys, I have a 2007 with a 6.7 and auto trans and for the past year and a half I have noticed that the exhaust brake works great after starting in the morning and continues to work fine however long the trip is, but if I make a stop such as getting fuel or going to the store and shut the engine off, after restarting the exhaust brake is not working, if the truck sits for a period of time, anywhere from one to four hours or so, it usually works but not guaranteed. After sitting overnight it works fine again, also when it is working, I can turn it off with the button and it comes right back on, but when it is not working, turning it on and off with button does nothing, I have had the truck since new and it has no deletes and all maintenance has been done on it. I drive with the exhaust brake on all the time and in Tow Haul, thanks for any insight, also I called the company that makes the Actuator that has been in the TDR magazine and talked to Jason and he said it does not sound like the actuator but more like a temperature related problem in the Turbo, so I thought I could get some input here, Thanks

It sure sounds like an electrical failure of the controls. Time for some testing.

The electronics in the controller are probably going bad from age and heat. The HE351VE does not have adequate cooling to the electronic portion of the turbo and they tend to fail. I don't think the ED is a error condition if it doesn't work, early trucks were rather crude in that respect. Have also seen carbon and carbon damage that would stop EB function with no codes, however, it never worked at all cold or warm. Makes me think it is just a controller issue that is not be tracked for DTC's.

Thanks for the reply and I would like to ask some more questions. The turbo does not fail to create boost, the truck runs fine all the time whether the exhibit. brake is working or not, would it be electrical and only affect the exhaust. brake function and only after stopping and restarting in a short period of time. Initially I thought that the new style actuator that has been advertised in the TDR magazine might be the answer since it does away with most of the electronics but after talking to City Diesel they say the problem does not sound like an actuator problem but an internal problem and I thought I would try to get more feedback here, I have tried all the common fixes such as letting it run longer before shutting off, shutting off the exhaust. brake switch before shutting the engine down but nothing changes the symptom but letting the truck sit for a period of time, anywhere from one to four hours, Thanks for any info you might have

Thanks for the reply and just to add some info, the exhaust. brake works great in the morning and for quite some time, the problem arises after shutting the engine off and then restarting such as getting fuel or going into a store, after sitting for a short period of time and then restarting the exhaust. brake is not working. If I let the vehicle sit for awhile, say anywhere from one to four hours then the exhaust. brake will work correctly, any more info would be greatly appreciated

Yes, I have checked for codes and none are present, this issue started while coming home from a long summer trip pulling the fifth wheel home through the mountains between Oregon and California, stopped at a rest area to use the restroom, let the truck run for a period of time to cool everything down, shut engine off and used the restroom and maybe 15 minutes later started the truck back up and headed back on the highway and after awhile noticed that the exh, brake was not working. We pulled into the next rest area for lunch and after 45 minutes or so, started up and headed back on the road and the exh. brake was working fine, and then after an hour and a half, stopped to get fuel and shut engine off for a short time started back on road and exh. brake was not working again and has been like this for a year and a half, I have cleaned the Map sensor, replaced the air filter and have replaced the batteries, thanks for any thoughts, also after talking to City Diesel, the company that makes the upgraded Actuator, their rebuilt turbo comes with the upgraded actuator, I would just like too see if I am missing something before I spend a bunch of money on a turbo, also the truck has @ 190,000 miles on it

Assume it is not deleted? Have had the turbo cleaning done?

At almost 200k and 14 years both the turbo and controller are suspect.

The truck has no deletes and the original turbo was not equipped with the removable fitting for doing the cleaning, also, from the time I first bought this truck, randomly code 2453 would come on, I had it back to the dealer many times and they could never find anything wrong, a mechanic I talked to told it comes on when the engines needs a regen, so I run it and wait a week or more and clear the code and everything is fine, also several years ago I had to have both the TIPM and the ECM replaced and I had a Dodge dealer do the work, I mentioned to him about the code 2453 coming up periodically and didn’t have too much to offer about it, the truck has always performed great and I have never had any messages on the overhead and if I put my monitor in place I can tell when a regen is occurring by watch EGT as they climb and decrease so the system seems to work correctly for the most part
