I resently talked to a guy that added a pac brake to his 3rd gen. truck only to be disappionted. The retarding HP wasn't the same as his pac brake on his 2nd gen. truck ,do to the way the valves are in the HPCR engine.

does anyone know the no. of retarding HP from 2nd to 3rd gen. ?????

My old 12 valve had a auto so Ive never driven a truck w/ an ex brake.

I've ordered an 05 w/ 6 sp. and an ex brake was one of my first mods.

Now I'm wondering if it is worth it.

of course w/ the 6 sp it'll be better than the old auto. the only hold back with the auto is with one foot on the brake and the other foot out the hole in the floor board pushed against the front wheel, like I did as a kid rideing my bicycle with no brakes. :-laf

PS. is the Pac Brake the way to go or is there a better chioce ?

I used the Jacobs brake on both my 94 and on my 03. I feel that they are both a good investment. The one on my 03 is every bit as effective as the one on the 94 was, if not better. The one on the 03 works real nice for better engine warm up, as it will stay engaged when the engine goes into high idle. I cannot tell you which brake is the best as I only have experience with the Jake. I used the Jake because it is a joint with Cummins, Jake and Chrysler and comes with warranty. The exhaust brake is definitely worth having, especially if you are towing. My old 94 had about a 1/4 million on it when I sold it and I still had 90% of the original brakes left.

I had the same experience. Had a std duty US Gear brake on my 01 5 speed and then the same model on my 03, seemed quite a bit weaker. I changed to the US Gear superduty on my 03 and I'm very impressed with the difference in power and how usable it is across the RPM band. I do sell them, never sold another, but the benefits of the superduty design are, IMO, unmatched by any other (And I'm a techie gearhead) PM me if you're interested in more scoop.

The back pressure on the 2nd and 3rd generation is the same... I own both... an 01 and 04 and I can't tell the difference when pulling the same load going down the same hill... If you think your having problems with your PacBrake take it to a PacBrake dealer and let him check it out... between 2200 and 2500 rpm and you let the throttle snap back to idle the back pressure should snap up between 50 and 60 psi of back pressure... as far as I know all good dealers have test equipment to do this. . thats one of the reasons for the test port in the top of the brake housing.....

If you haven't tightened the clamp between the PacBrake and turbo there could be a leak there... . the hot / cold cycle will allow this to work loose once..... after 200 or so miles when its cold... tighten it up. . you should get 3-5 turns on the nut... .

Hope i've been of some help...

Thanks for the input. how about durability. Anyone with problems or maintance issues with pacbrake or us gear?? I'm not looking to start a debate, I just want to make the best chioce for my new truck. I normally keep a truck for 5-10 yrs. so I'd like to buy a unit that is going to be as trouble free as possible.
