Does anyone know if you can put a Jakebrake or Pacbrake on with the 48RE auto without harming the trans. ? I have a 2004 2500 Quad Cab Auto 3:73 rears (with a howl) and I tow a 30' Prowler 30E Bunkhouse Prodigy brake control. Trailer weight is 6380 w/o water truck weight is 6900. Last time I ran thru Pennsylvania I was running with a full load of water 40 gals. And did not like the way she stopped. :(

Very true, but the Allison used behind the Cummins in those applications is not the same Allison. I drive a School bus with the Cummins 5. 9 L 24V that utilizes an Allison transmission, but I can tell you, it is not anything like the Allison in the Duramax!

Every Allison I've seen in the past 10 years can be exhaust brake ready with a programer available at any Allison dealer... we often put exhaust brakes on them and if the transmission doesn't down shift and hold pressure we run them down the our Allison dealer and he puts the programer on the transmission computer and turns on the function..... We have done this behind several engines used by various truck builders... .

I personally wouldn't put one on the 48re with out some method of holding up the fluid pressure in the torque converter... . my reason for this is there isn't enough benifit with an exhaust brake unless you can lock up the transmission and hold it in a lower gear... . the low pressure in the transmission on slow down allows for too much slippage and higher temperatures... .
