Driving a new 2011 Ram 3500 dually. Dealer and tech all tell me to drive with Exhaust Brake activated 24/7. When I ask why or for what benefits, they really never have told me why. Does anyone have any insight to this claim? Does it extend the Re-Gen cycle? Thanks for any input.

You should do a little reading here in the forum. That subject and related issues have been thoroughly explained and discussed many times.

Your variable geometry turbocharger nozzle that provides the exhaust braking function should be allowed to exercise from full closed (exhaust braking) to full open (full boost) on a regular basis to discourage soot buildup.

First welcome to the forum.

As Harvey has stated there is a lot of information on the 6. 7L engine and the emission equipment on this site, to review. The last issue of the TDR magazine issue 70, under the Technical Topics pages 46-50 they discussed the Variable Geometry Turbocharger. This is a very interesting article on the VGT on our trucks and the operation of it. You can order a back issues or read it on this web site.

Another feature of the exhaust brake when engaged is that the engine when cold will warm up faster along with high idle when engaged also. The exhaust brake when engaged will also help in keeping the EGT'S higher for more efficient burn of the soot in the DPF filter when regen process takes place.
