Are the wastegates the same?

I'm trying to fill up the third gauge hole in my 3 gauge pod, and I stopped by BD Diesel the other day looking for suggestions and they said I could get a pressure gauge for my exhaust brake. He went on to say that this way I could make sure it was closing fully and keep an eye on the pressure so I would know if any adjustments are necessary.

I don't even know how / why one would make adjustments to it, but has anyone else done this gauge thing? Any thoughts about it?

I am lookin' to get rid of my guages all together and have just my FMS which has boost , pyro , Vp44 fuel rate and get an x~Monitor that has Exhaust brake , Trans Temp , Fuel Pressure. That way all screens match.

However you could use a regular boost guage and paint the area where it says boost to whatever color the face is and put brake for back pressure (You kinda want to keep an eye on backpressure settings as too much can float an exhaust vale however unlikly on a 24V and too little won't work efficiently)

I used a 'manifold pressure' gauge to fill up the 3rd hole in my A pillar. What we did is use 1/8" copper line and made a moonshine still coils so that the exhaust would be cool enough by the time it gets up to the firewall so that I could attach it to the 1/8" plastic line. This runs inside to the gauge. It works great... . Since I have a US Gear 4" remote(De-cellarator)(sp?) it already had a port on the wastegate...

This works great and looks major cool!

Good idea ToolMan. I already have the FMS, may try to hide it inside a triple guage dash mount but I don't mind it sitting on the dash. I never had standard guages and don't have any complaints about the digital except for not being able to read it if the sun is directly behind the truck glaring at it.

I also think the X-monitor would be good for the e-brake reading because since they come with a boost hose, just attach it to the e-brake instead... . Interesting... . :)

I have a black face Isspro guage. It is nice to see the reaction time so you know it's not sticking. I think in that two years I might have adjusted the clevis once. The kit comes with a piece of stainless about a foot long that plumbs to the turbo and is braced off the heater lines. From there it uses ~1/8" plastic tubing. The brass fitting for the plastic tubing had this little baffle which I think is to limit soot. It plugged up and I lost it while trying to clean it a year or so ago. Still working fine.

Nick, I contacted Ted Janetty and he made some calls to BD about a custom unit that has Trans Temp , Fuel pressure , and Exhaust Brake Backpressure. We would have to get some more people involved who would want such a thing as they will be custom built units..... and not the cheapest things in the world either. The X Monitor however is the EXACT display in our FMS units. The Pod also looks sweet as my buddy just finished up an install in his '01 and it looks great!

It will be an actual backpressure transducer so that will be it's sole purpose which is cool.

I know they will be expensive for those custon setups, but couldn't you use the regular EGT, Boost, Fuel Pressure, keep the fuel pressure, use the EGT probe for the transmission, the boost pressure for the brake pressure?

ToolMan,

Any pics of the install? I am considering putting guages in my truck finally and am looking at the X-Monitor. Where is it installed. I was hoping for somewhere other than the A pillar.

Wait a minute... . your problem is too much space for gauges? You must have a much larger dash than I do. ;)

BD actually sells a specific brake backpressure gauge made by ISSPRO, why not just buy it separtly instead of trying to do a custom deal?

Just a little different, but I use a Vacume gage, I can see when it closes and when it opens. Also I can monitor my pump, and keep track of the HVAC system with all of it vacume motors.

How about if your running an air operated exhaust brake! Isspro sells a dual needle air pressure guage. That way you can monitor your air tank and pressure to your brake :D

Guage #R8606-ISSPRO

The Pacbrake on the 03's does not charge with air from a tank it makes it on demand. I suppose you could still monitor the pressure but you would have no reading unless the brake was on. I have a small gauge plumbed in under the hood just for this reason if I suspect something is wrong or just want to know.

Another idea would be to pass the signal for both boost and exhaust back pressure through a standard relay, activated by the signal from the exhaust brake. That way you can use the boost gauge for both boost and exhaust back pressure.

Any thoughts?
