Exh. Brake does not work after making a stop

I have a 2009 6.7 automatic. I have run the exhaust brake at all times since purchasing the truck new. At 100,000 I did deletes. Truck has 215,000 miles now and have been very pleased. About 4 weeks ago I noticed that the EB stopped working (at least stopped slowing the truck). As it has cooled down in FL and I have the windows down more it is obvious (by sound) that the EB is coming on properly but is not producing enough (back pressure?) to slow the truck. Fuses are good. I am really lost and need some direction. I tow with this truck 5 or 6 days a week and even though we are on flat land I really need my EB working. Thank you for any help.

I haven't driven the 07.5 and newer trucks, so I'm not sure what they feel like. If your truck has an automatic transmission, be sure to note that the torque converter is locked up while the exhaust brake is on. If it is not, you will get very little engine braking.

On my 2012 the VGT EB stopped giving 100% around 100k miles. Come to find out Dodge has the CCV filter exhausting just behind the cold air intake...just upstream from the turbo! Over time and not using the brake often enough deposits CCV left overs into the VGT. There's a fix I'll get around to that vents the CCV to outside air instead of upstream from turbo...some day.
Best of luck to you.

I don't believe that is correct. The CCV does not vent to the exhaust side of the turbo, where the variable component of the turbo is located. The exhaust side of the turbo can get coked up from a poor running engine, lack of exhaust brake use or simply alot of miles.

Sorry I wasn't clear, Don. The CCV does vent, via a hose, to behind the cold air intake, upstream of the turbo. At least it does on my 2012. There's a fix I watched on YouTube.
Run a hose from the original outlet on the (head) cover, wore tie it to the fire wall and let it hang outa the way. Then you buy a female plug for the male coming out of cold air intake pipe that runs to the turbo.

The CCV vent to the intake tract won't affect the sliding collar on the exhaust side of the turbo, that is all the EGR soot and garbage doing that and lack really running the snot out of it. If the collar stops moving the turbo throws codes and it goes into limp mode. If the EB is coming on then there is a problem in the drive train, like a TC not locking. Hard to think the clutch is slipping but......

Have a 2018 5500 Ram Auto trans, want to enable the exhaust brake to work when doing 10-15 mph. Some of the hills we go down with a loaded trailer we use low range 4wd .Anybody figured this out. Thanks

Probably should start your own thread....but I don't think anyone has a way to make the EB work at such low speeds due to torque converter being unlocked.

Works flawless on my old 04.5 right from factory.
But no clue how the CCs are programmed.
EB in low range is awesome, unbelievable braking power.

Doesn’t your 04.5 require an aftermarket trans controller?

No lockup in 1st and won’t lock 2nd under 20 on the AS69RC.

Nope, it works perfect with the Jake Brake. The 05 is the one that isn't capable to handle an EB.
Lockup from second gear up and locks at around 10-12mph, drop out is at around 7-8mph.

On my truck I can get the exhaust brake to work at low speeds. In order to get the exhaust brake to work you need to keep the engine at 1,100 RPM's or more. The exhaust brake is depended on engine RPM's and not road speed. In order to keep the engine RPM's above 1,100 you need to toggle the transmission control so as to lock out 4th gear and above.

I have done this since new on my 2008, when I want to use engine exhaust braking instead of my wheel brakes. A word of caution you should tap the wheel brakes a little to light up the brake lights for the people following you.
