4" vs 5" exhaust?

Since it seems the Cummins exhaust brake is not approved for use on the 03 HO auto's, is damage possible or is this just a cya warranty issue by DC? If it is safe I'd still like to get one. Have seen several models (Jacobs, Banks, Pacbrake) advertised and would like one that is best suited to the auto, that also improves warmup time and does not hinder performance. Thanks for any info.

Did you read the Good News/Bad News thread from Carlton Bale? It seems DC has reservations about the exhaust brake working seamlessly in all situations, with the 48re as it is currently designed to be controlled. Perhaps an aftermarket controller (the Emjay perhaps) will resolve that, but it sounds like more than a CYI warranty thing to me. I have read that some Dodge dealers have installed the e-brake, and in at least one case agreed to provide a written transmission warranty; but that would not be honored by another dealer without a lot of discussion and a payment from the installing dealer. DC will not stand behind it, if the e-brake causes transmission problems. Beware.

Thanks, and yes I read the thread. Are transmission problems the cause? DC uses vague language like "reliability issues". Can anyone share their experiences / problems with an ebrake on the 03 auto? I don't want to put on a $1000 headache.

It would be interesting to see what the problem would be with the emjay controller and the 48re. From what I read it seems to be that the TC disengages too early then fluid sheer can occur. It the emjay controller can maintain TC lockup would this not address all the concerns?

The Emjay Strategy controller unlocks the TCC when it disengages the exhaust brake. The only time the exhaust brake is on without the TCC is when it is in warmup mode. When you first start the engine, the exhaust brake engages until you press the brake pedal the first time, aiding warmup in remote-start situations.

The Strategy controller contains a complete exhaust brake solution that eliminates the need for PCM control and mechanical switches. The exhaust brake delay can be adjusted from 0-3 seconds in 0. 2 second increments. Optionally, you can have it triggered with the service brake. You can also program it to downshift out of OD when the brake is applied with an independently adjustable 0-3 second delay.

You will need modifications to the 48RE valve body for exhaust braking. It is recommended that an aftermarket torque converter suitable for exhaust braking be used as well.

Well, if they won't allow an exhaust brake, you're SOL as far as the warranty goes, however, they have to prove that any added accessory actually caused a failure per federal law. If you build (or have built) a transmission that is designed to support an exhaust brake, virtually all transmission builders will provide a warranty. Besides, would you want DC messing with your modified transmission? Other failures (engine parts, for instance) could not be attributed to aftermarket trans mods, especially since the engine is designed for use with an exhaust brake.
