Would someone tell me how an exhaust brake works from the drivers perspective? I've never used one, is it just a hand brake or is it connected to footbrake. Im totally ignorant about this. Do some brand work differently? Thanks for the help.

Tom W,
Welcome aboard!!!

I have a BD Turbo Mount Exhaust brake. There is a micro switch you install on the accelerator pedal and a master power On/Off
switch you can mount on the dash or on the shift lever. I opted for the shift lever mount. When the brake is powered (12 volts is applied) AND the micro switch on the accelerator pedal is made (idle), the E-Brake activates. It retards the exhaust gases by closing a butterfly valve in the unit. Picture a carburetor on an old gas engine, when the throttle plate is closed, very little air passes the venturi. Same with the E-Brake, very little exhaust gets out. I believe the Turbo Mount from BD creates 190 HP of retarding power on the 24 valve Cummins.

Hope this helps..... #ad

Mick2500, Thanks, that helps. So there is no varible to the braking action, either full on or off? I'm going to have Bill Kondola install a Pac brake when he rebuilds my transmission in October.

Tow W,

Welcome, to the board.

Mick2500 is right on with the BD. What he described is basically how they all work. One way they vary is how they insure that you don't generate excess back pressure. Some put a hole in the butterfly to insure there is some flow thru. The BD and US Gear use a relief valve. Most mount right behind the turbo. One exception is US Gear. They mount down near the muffler if memory serves me.

There are some risks using an exhaust brake with an Auto. Check out this posting for over heated brakes https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum17/HTML/000398.html . In addition to the problem described by dewdo, you can create overheating problems for the transmission if the TC isn't locked up with the exhaust brake active. That's one reason folks install a lockup or 'mystery switch'. Research 'mystery switch' for a variety of posts.

As you'll note in my signature I do have an e-brake. I tow and I am glad I have it. I also use it around town. With the auto you need to remember to manually disengage the ebrake at about 25 mph (it's really the RPM - but that's a longer story)if you don't use something like the Auto-Loc. Otherwise you stall the engine just like stopping a manual without pushing in the clutch.

You'll also find the brake feels like down shifting about a gear or two (depending on speed and the gears) in a gasser.

My apologizes to all for the long reply. Bad habit of mine.

Rattlin, Thanks for the info. I'm familiar with TC problems. Bill K said the Pac brake worked better with his TC which I'm getting in Oct.

Tom,
I have a Pacbrake on my 98. 5 24v w/5 spd. It worked fine with the accelerator microswitch for about 6 mos. Then it started all sorts of b. s. like not releasing sometimes, not coming on sometimes, not working at all sometimes. I called Pacbrake and they sent a new(at no charge) controller to replace the micrositch. It is wired to the ECM on pin #20 and works much better. Always the underhood part worked fine it was the actuator that was the pits. They told me I would have to get the ECM reflashed at Cummins or DC to turn on pin #20 but it was already turned on when I tried it after installing the wiring.
You will like the brake for towing. It is a great safety feature as well as easier on the brakes. I use it all the time, even when not towing,(except when wife is along-she hates it) as it makes a neat sound and still provides the same advantages.
Make sure you get the ECM controlled set up, not the accel. pedal microswitch.

Jack in Alaska; Thanks for the info. My first trip with this truck was to Alaska. We had a 25ft Wilderness 5th wheel. The truck was stock at that time and worked perfectly. It was our first RV to see if we liked RVing. The trip was fantastic, we drove the Alaska hwy and took side trips to Skagway, Haines, Valdez, Anchorage, Fairbanks, and back to Texas. About 10K miles in six weeks, averaged 13mpg. I now have a much bigger 5th wheel, 33ft Cardinal and a lot more power. Our last trip with it was 4000 miles and averaged 11 mpg. I'd recommend that Alaska trip it certainly is beautiful.
