I have an in-line BD exhaust brake installed on my '03 2500 HO CTD. On a recent long trip with my fifth wheel the transfer case jumped out of gear while on a down grade with the exhaust brake engaged. It did this twice, both times with the exhaust brake engaged.

Has anyone had problems with their exhaust brake causing the transfer case to pop out of gear, or problems generally with the transfer case popping out?

It's a little exciting to suddenly be freewheeling down a long grade with 14K of fifth wheel pushing you down a 4% windy grade. :--)

My '98 truck's transfer case would jump out of gear when pulling a load down steep grades. After taking it to 3 dealers, they told me that they couldn't duplicate the problem, and that there was nothing wrong. One dealer told me that it was the limited slip in the rear end and added limited slip fluid and told me that should take care of the problem... what a dumbass! After no satisfaction from the DC hotline and the dealer, I videotaped the transfer case lever jumping forward and also showing the trailer I was pulling and the grade I was on. After the video proof, my dealer here replaced the transfer case under warrenty, and I haven't had any problems since. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks, that helps a lot. Since it happened only twice in 1600 miles I doubt the dealer will be able to duplicate. No doubt, they will be reluctant to replace the transfer case if they can't see the problem.

I'm going to bring a copy of your post to at least show them what was done to correct the problem with someone else.

Thanks again.
