I am looking for some advice on an exhaust brake.

What are the pro's and con's of a turbo mount -vs- a remote down pipe mount??

The remote mount seems appealing because of its larger 4" diameter. However, is there any danger of a remote mount exhaust brake failing by losing the back pressure due an exhaust pipe fitting leaking?

I have a 97 - 5 spd and have generally decided that the BD brake is the brake i wish to have due to its greater retarding ability at low rpm's. However i am still undecided because i do not know much about the Banks brake. Has anyone had experience with Banks brake that they can relate to me?

I chose the BD 4" remote mount. This way when the bombing bug bites to the point I need a PDR HX40, I dont have to worry. The remote mount will not need to be removed, changed or any of that.

No experience with the banks brake. BD's website has a big banks brake comparinson where they refute all the claims to HP and that stuff.

From what I see driving my truck and riding around in others I know with turbo mount brakes, the 4" size does not seem to make it any more or less effective than the turbo mount models.

When my remote mount was installed, my exhaust was welded instead of clamped. No leaks. It was also installed where the cross member for the transfer case and skid plate are. Very nice job. Installed in a place where it gets some protection and things like that.

Slybones,

Thanks for your reply.

Do you notice any lag in braking response due to the length of pipe needing to be pressurized? A local shop warned me of this. This seems to me to be - well almost silly. But not knowing and having no experience on this matter, I ask what do you say?

No lag in response. I also have the remote mount for the exact reason mentioned above. I knew i would be changing turbos. There is no lag at all as far as response time. I love the remote mount. I also welded all joints ahead of the brake to prevent leaks. If you know for a fact you will never change turbos, i would probably go with the direct mount, however, just for the ease of instalation. but if you arent afraid of a little cutting and welding in the exhaust, you will not be sorry either way you go. The BD is a quality unit

remote mount

Same here... remote mount is the way to go. BD's brake is great, talk to Piers... . good price.

I have the D/C brake installed at the turbo. It does not get all the road dirt and spray, and works great plus if it does go D/C will repair. No US Mail to deal with or phones:)

The remote mount seems like a great idea, the less stuff in the engine compartment, the better. When i get my transmission re-done i am going with a BD remote.

I have the turbo mount BD; very happy with it. But I'll add that I don't believe that "response lag" on the remotes is a real concern. Maybe there could be a very slight lag. But considering the airflow at 2000 rpm, I bet the "lag" is less than 1 second. Exhaust brakes are not for instant stopping anyway. If you don't plan ahead, or someone pulls in front of you, you're going to be using the service brakes not playing around with the exhaust brake.
