Exhaust Brake- whats the BEST one ? HELP

I had a dodge exhaust brake orderd , its never came in , & thay raised the price to over $1200. 00 . My dealer still dont have one ,He is talking like I will get my $500. 00 down payment back . So I am looking at other manufactures . Is it true the vaccum pump that comes with dodge exhaust brake is like the one on the power stroke that comes a part tears up a lot ? Would the exhaust brake that comes with own air compressor that acuates the exhaust flapper be more dependable ? I wander why dodge used a lite duty belt driven vaccum pump , instead of a gear driven vaccum pump , like in the past ? Are some exhaust brakes less restrictive as for as the exhaust flow ? . Appreciate all the help I can get, THANKS.

We at Cummins Rocky Mountain have the '03 HD brakes in stock and ready. Comes with the Gear shift switch and all... . Check with the local Cummins boys...



We are working on a product comaprison to show the differences. Anyone have comments on the Pac, or other brands yet?

I just received the Jacobs brake that Dodge offered for the $299. 00 "Business" people price when I first purchased my truck in November. My dealer had the $299. 00 price in the contract. He honored that price!



I will be putting it on in the next week.

That's a screamin' deal! Just today I was at my local Cummins Intermountain dealer and he quoted me $730, that's without the cool shift lever switch.

I don't understand your Cummins dealer price, as the switch came in the kit! As a matter of fact, I installed the switch yesterday as well as the e-brake. I will be installing the pump and the rest of the suff in the kit today. It is a nice kit, and the instructions are very good!

The vacuum pump included with the Cummins / Jacobs kit is not the same pump used by Duramax. The Cummins pump is a completely redesigned, heavy duty configuration. It has heavy duty bearings and a large diameter, internally captured/constrained shaft.



All of the Cummins / Jacobs MY03 E-brake kits include a vacuum pump and the new shift lever switch.

Wayne, Congrats on the install. I too am very pleased about the performance of my brake. Best set of instructions I have read in a long time. While the Jacobs cost a bit more, there will be no warrantee issues down the road if something happens. I am sure that the other makers offer a good brake as well, but I felt better about the warrantee statement in the Mopar kit. My two cents Canadian.

If you go to the link provided by Ben Stair and scroll to the bottom of that page, you will see that Dodge recommends the Exhaust Brake only on vehicles equipped with the manual transmission.



One might be taking quite a risk on warranty coverage even if he could find an exhaust brake compatible with the automatic transmission.

Cummins is not in a position to handle automatic transmission

complaints and drive-train issues, when exhaust brakes are used on the Cummins

powered Dodge trucks. DaimlerChrysler has issued the following

statement:



E BRAKE NOT APPROVED FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

As of 26 February 1999, DaimlerChrysler has requested Cummins to stop

selling exhaust brakes for installation on pick-ups with automatic

transmissions. Their concern is that the exhaust brake will have a

detrimental effect on the reliability and durability of the transmission,

particularly if a customer installs an unauthorized transmission "Lock-up"

switch to improve braking performance.



Trucks with MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS ARE NOT affected by this instruction.



Since DaimlerChrysler is the company that sets the policy on which

products will affect the Dodge

drive-train warranty, we suggest contacting the Dodge dealer from whom

you purchased your truck and have them explain the current

DaimlerChrysler policy on exhaust brakes, as well as whether there are any

DaimlerChrysler-approved brands.





You will notice that the date is '99. May need to call DC to see what they say about the new 48RE.

That's my understanding also. My earlier question was how does the switch mount with the auto. The switch I've seen would look real tackey mounted on the auto shift lever.
