Alright, another one of my stupid questions, but I gotta ask it. What in the world is an exhaust brake and what does it do? I was under the impression that it was infact some type of a brake system that would aid the brakes under heavy load, but according to a post I read in here, it adds horsepower... so is it some type of engine upgrade or something?

An exhaust brake is a supplementary braking system used to help slow your vehicle. This slowing power is achieved by restricting the flow of exhaust gasses and increasing back pressure inside the engine. This increased back pressure creates resistance against the pistons in your engine, slowing the crankshaft's rotation and ultimately helping to slow your vehicle.

Exhaust Brake Horsepower Gain

You must have read the post on the new Banks exhaust brake. Theirs is the first to claim a horsepower gain (unproven as yet). In general they do not create any additional horsepower and about the only reference to horsepower that you will see is "brake horsepower". These brakes make a noise similar to the noise produced by "big trucks" with "Jake brakes". Slang for the Jacobs brake. If you are going to tow any trailers, I would highly recomend you purchase one. Good Luck and welcome aboard, since I see by your posts you are fairly new to the TDR. You will find there is no better investment in your truck than membership in the TDR.

CMoursund welcome aboard the TDR... I can only add one thing to the above posts... our brakes are "muffled", so are not nearly as loud as the big boys. If you tow, it will be your favorite accessory and save on your service brakes.

Muffled?

Rob-

Muffled? What is muffled? Not sure what a muffler or muffled means? Is that one of those strange things that used to be in the exhaust system that fell off?

CMoursund- Welcome to the TDR. You'll definitely enjoy it here even with us smarta$$e$! This place is the best there is for advice and information.
