Can anyone tell me is it neccessary to have the electronic modules that the various and assorted exhaust brake vendors advertise on a truck with an automatic. I read in my latest issue of Trailer Life about the new Banks Brake. According to that article you can buy the basic brake with out the electronic module and it will work fine. I thought I had heard that the module was required in order to use an exhaust brake with an Automatic. I'm confused can anyone help.

If you use an exhaust brake without locking up the torque converter you will toast your transmission. Been there and done that!

DRytting,

The situation with the stock auto is that after a few seconds of idle throttle (coast) the torque convertor clutch (TCC) will unlock so the engine will drop to idle RPM and there is no engine braking; ie. it free wheels. So you need some sort of device to force the TCC to remain locked for an exhaust brake to work. Check with DTT about an exhaust brake and their Smart Controller at:

Call DTT and talk to them, tell them what you have and what you want it to do, they will give you straight answers on what you need.

You will need some electronics because when you let off the gas, the exhaust brake comes on, but the torque converter un-locks, so you will just be slowing the motor down, not the truck.

EDIT: Geez joe, looks like we were typing in unison... :)

Thanks guys I thought it was something like that but the article confused me a little, so I thought I would ask the experts

As stated above, call DTT.

Here is the combo I have and I'm VERY pleased with it.

DTT 91% TC and VB, Pacbrake and DTT Smartcontroller. This is a very impressive setup for towing and slowing.
