I am looking at getting an exhaust brake for my '93. I know a lot has been written about the Pac Brake brand and that Cummins advertizes the Jacobs as factory authorized. Is on better than the other, or is it just a matter of choice? Thanks in advance.

I believe they are all pretty good, I think the BD will give you better braking without having to install heavier exhaust valve springs that are required on other brands for max effect. The BD is more money but springs arnt required. So the the money for springs and labor on the other brands make the BD cheaper and I believe its the best. I get my BD in 2 weeks.
Good Luck

I have a BD brake with 60lb springs (they are reported to give about 30% more braking). I really like the quality and operation of the brake. Highly recommended.

I have a U. S Gear exhaust-mount model which was easy to install and does not require the heavy springs. It gets the job done. I drove a '99 3500 with a turbo-mount Pacbrake, and it seemed about the same (but that's 2 different trucks we're talkin about here) so I don't know which one would give the most braking, but if you don't want to do the valves and want an easy installation, the U. S. gear might be for you.
If youy do get one and need tips on installation, E-mail me!

Thanks to everyone's reply. I had actually forgot about the spring issued that is involved. If you do go with a brand that needs heavier exhaust springs, how involved a procedure is this?

Valve springs take about 2-2. 5 hrs and a valve set must be done. If you are not familiar with doing one, go to a shop and they should have all the equipment to do the job.

I know this is the wrong forum, but I have a Jacobs/Cummins on my 99. It works great. I think if I buy one for the 89 it will be the same brand. I really like how it works.
