What is the deal with exhaust brakes on the Dodge diesel with automatic? I have read (here)a lot about them, but have also read where they were being removed from rigs with automatics... Can anybody help me out?

C9100, The problem with using an exhaust brake on a automatic equiped truck is with the exhaust brake on it builds up a lot of heat that can destory your transmission unless you add a mystry switch or something like that so you can lock the torque converter when the exhaust brake is on.

I have one and I can't imagine how I could ever live without it. Check my signature for the combination I'm using. What ever you do don't cut corners, you must install a locking device on your transmissions torque converter wiring when using a e-brake with an automatic. The only reason I would remove my e-brake would be if it wore out,it would be off and a new one would take it's place. I can't say that I have ever read of anyone wearing one out yet.

c9100. .

The problem isn't the exhaust brake, it is the automatic transmission (read torque convertor). My understanding is that it is just the reverse of rapid acceleration, if you come on to the throttle the torque convertor will slip and create heat. So it goes that when you apply the exhaust brake you are travelling fairly fast and you want to slow down (engine RPMs are low, because you are off the throttle, and vehicle speed is high). Therefore your torque convertor is slipping on deceleration and also creating heat. This really gets going when you are zooming up one side of a mountain and then throttle off and coast down the other side.
The ideal setup is to have some sort of lockup device to maintain TC lockup when the throttle is at idle. Remember too, that at idle, transmission pressures will also be low which also allows for more slippage.

I hope this helps...
