I am interested in an exhaust brake for my 03 SO 5 speed and I see prices from 799. 00 to 1300. 00 what is the difference is there a quality issue I should bee aware of? Seldom do I see such a large price difference without a reason weather it be quality or ? I see Pacbrake prices being the lowest is there a reason... What brands are members here using and what is your input, would you try something diff. next time etc...

Thanks

Robert

There are several different manufacturers of exhaust brakes for the Dodge/Cummins trucks. Some brakes mount at the turbo, and some mount downstream from it. The type you choose is up to you, but I would think the turbo mount is the most popular. It is the easiest to install, wire, and plumb. Also it is protected from the harsh environment of under the truck. On the newer trucks they do not have a factory vacuum pump, which is used to operate the butterfly valve on the exhaust brakes. So newer trucks wanting the benefits of the exhaust brake, will have to pay more because there kits will include the necessary pumps and hardware needed to run the system.

I think one of the most overlooked components of a proper exhaust brake installation is the controller. This unit makes much more since, it locks up the torque converter and exhaust brake as a unit. Allowing the maximum amount of engine braking, with the least amount of driver effort.

I would look around and visit the different manufacturers web sites, call or E-mail questions, and get familiar with the product. Only then would you be able to compare and appreciate the many different brands and types of brakes.

I don't know about prices now but last year whne I got my Pac, the BD,, Pac, and Jacobs were all within $125 of each other. Now there is a Banks brake I don't know the cost but all of his stuff seems to be pretty pricey.

I recently installed a PacBrake, direct mount on the turb style. Real straight forward, just make sure all fittings and connections are tight. I love the gear shift switch. Without the auto, you won't need to worry about the controller.

One suggestion is to get the air tank option. It allows the brake to engage quicker. You could also run an air horn or top off a tire with it.

The Jake/Mopar brake costs a few hundred more and is a bit more to install due to the vacuum pump required. I don't know much about the BD or Banks other than all listings I saw they were more expensive. Pac has been around awhile and seem reliable if maintained and used often.

I'm very happy with the Pac. Dependable, easy to install, and the best addition I ever made to this truck. I wired mine in with a floor switch like trucks use.

I got my PacBrake from Fred Swanson@ www.desertdieselparts.com By far the best price I could find. I went with the 4" in line just in case I later go with a bigger turbo and then the PakBrake wont work. I love it. People are amazed that I can row to a stop without even hitting the service brakes. Great investment... . Any brake you get will work the same as the one I have. Just go with the one that is the most cost efficient.

Have had the PAC on for a week & love it. Decided on it for ease of installation & no vac pump. Shifter switch is a good idea. Installation instructions were very good & everything fit perfectly. Oo.
