Exhaust exiting in front of rear wheel:

Who has it and what are the +/- about doing this. All I can think of is for a plus it would be cheaper. For negatives it may be grubby rear tire and rim, louder, and smoke closer to cab when wife takes forever getting in. I like the thoughts of it, but I would like to hear from some of you that have already done this.

I have a custom 4" exhaust..... exits in front of the rear tire. I love this setup, I give credit to Briar Hopper. I got to see his setup in Townsend TN. during one of the Southeastern Turbo Diesel Registry get togethers, man it looked good and I was hooked.

I have a 4" Walker muffler in the stream, so the sound is deep, not obnoxious. I have noticed some sooting of the rear wheel though, about on par with the disk brake dust on the front. I do know turbo cool down time before shut off has been decreased considerably. The EGT’s seem to be around 100 degrees cooler, maybe the 4” and no hard bends going over the rear axle. I haven't had a problem with fumes, though I don't have the passenger door open that often.

Total cost for my system including parts and labor was $250. I hope this is of help... .....

Think about this one guys. I just sold my old stock 3" exhaust to a fellow Rammer who is going to use it to make duals for his Cummins. Seems like a good idea to me,two three inch pipes must equal at least a 5",cheap way to go also.

Sounds good so far, except for the soot, I'm getting new rims for Christmas and don't want to get them dirty! I've been good. #ad

I like mine... if your tires (including spare) are a bit oversize, there's no problem with tire/pipe contact, whereas a factory, or same-shape aftermarket system can be tight... . there's a photo of mine in a different post entitled "pictures of my truck (first attempt)" over in "12-valve"--rm

I just did mine that way 3 weeks ago with a Walker 21471. I wouldn't want it any louder!I stuck the pipe out about 2" past the tire hoping not to soot up the wheel. I haven't driven enough to tell yet! BTW... two threes has the same cross section area as one 4 1/4" pipe. Take a framing square and measure from one 3" mark diagonally to the other 3" mark on the inside scales. Old tinners trick - based on the hypotenuse of a right triangle!

I like the looks of the exhaust from the pic that Katdiesel put up. Does that tire get much soot on it? I am not to concerned about tire exhaust contact, because whoever modifies mine better not come that close to the tire! #ad

I wish I had done mine this way. When I got my 4" installed at Diesel Dynamics (out the rear), they were out of the chrome turn down tips so it took a month or so to get mine installed. After getting it on I noticed sounds that weren't there before. At highway speeds, it seems kind of like exhaust splatering as it makes that last turn at the down tip. I've gotten used to it but someday will go for the infrontoftherearwheel... ... .

To get the same cross sectional area as a 5", you'd need (2) 3 1/2" pipes.

I was born in the 70's so I think I might try it in front of rear wheel. #ad
If I don't like it I guess I can always make it longer.

When I made my 5 inch system . . I went the extra effort to make it go over the axle. . sorry guys but the before the tire exit reminds me of the 70's hippey van #ad

I have 6" exiting in front of the rear wheel and the only thing is that I have to clean that wheel twice as often as the other three. Sound is intense though!

Soot? I thought that was Cajun spice blackening the hubcap! #ad
--- while I had the star wheel a little too liberal, it was a little untidy. then I cranked it back a bit, and, coincidentally, lost (really, not "lost", but LOST!) one centercap, so I rearranged them. now the soot just goes onto the big black bearing cap, where its not noticeable. another advantage, though, would be less bubbling (backpressure) when launching or recovering a boat at the lake!

Didn't the first of the current generation Ferd 150's have the exhaust exit in front of the wheel? If I remember correctly, they moved it behind the wheel the second production year because they had problems with water vapor icing on the wheels in cold weather. Frozen brakes, rusty rims etc.

BNH. . you are correct about the 97 Ford F-150's... we have 2 for our shop and both have that "Nascar Truck Series" front tire exit. JB

I have 4" duals exiting to the side in front of my rear right side tires, slant-cut chrome tips. The down pipe goes into a custom-made "Y" then the pipes run side by side straight down to where they angle over in front of the tires.
yeah, my wheel gets sooty. Who cares? A little windex or 409 & a paper towel shines 'em right up. (supply of said items kept in toolbox) They're definitely attention getting,(especially on a new, all-black truck) and conveniently placed at the right height to smoke & thunder low-riders with their windows down. No turn-down tips on this one. (What for?)
