Has anybody seen or is it possible to put the tip of your exhaust in front of the rear wheel:confused: Anybody have a pic of that?

Post some pics of your exhaust tips. . I want to see what people are using out there.

Not sure if this applies, but a number of years ago I was discussing a replacement exhaust for my '68 Ranchero. The tech mentioned that it had to be a certain distance from the passenger compartment, and that in front of the rear wheels (on this particular vehicle) was not far enough.

It's probably an even shorter distance on the '03s. Just a thought.

Hey Tony- I think that was because of the gasser requirement of having backpressure. Diesels need to get rid of the stuff as soon as it exits the Turbo, since there is no further use for it. My '96 had the exhaust infront of the rear wheel, but I didn't like the NOISE, and especially the soot on the rear wheel/quarter panel. With the cleaner '03, the soot shouldn't be as much the problem, but noise will be there. Looked really good but wasn't worth the effort to keep the truck clean. My advice- go for it! You can always change it back later.

I made my 94 a side exit beacause of a rusted tailpipe and backing into snow piles, off-raoding, etc. I like it except for turning the center cap dark and now that I have traction bars, there is some interference with those. I got a set of stacks on eBay cheap though, so that is the next mod.

When I have problems with the 03 exhaust, it will probably come out the side.

The idea of exhaust having to be a certain distance back has to do with keeping carbon monoxide out of the passenger compartment when the vehicle is sitting still. With the exhaust exiting in front of the rear wheel on a truck it is far enough back, but not so on most cars.

Is this "requirement" for a certain distance from the psgr compartment a new thing, or maybe beginning in 98? The 97 Fraud short-bed extended cab gassers had the exhaust in front of the right rear. 98 and later moved 'em back behind.

I believe Ford moved the exhaust from in front of the tire, because during the winter the exhaust was freezing up the rear passenger side brake.

If memory serves me correctly, that exhaust pipe exit in front of the rear tire on the Found On Road Deads was the best thing since sliced bread! of course, in accordance with their literature.

My brother in law is a Ford wrench in Maryland. They got rid of the front exhaust because there were many states where you could not legally put a cap on the truck. Many states require the exhaust to exit the vehicle a foot behind the last opening window. He said they even went to the trouble of destroying the inventory they had. If you ordered the replacement parts, it went over the axle.

That said, I think dumping the exhaust in front of the wheels is a great idea.

Is everyone forgetting the Viper? it had side exhaust factory for the first 3-4 years. ( the change to rear exit was due to leg burns I was told not an exhaust exit requirement).

The wording I have heard is that the exhaust must pass beyond the passenger compartment; be it out sideways or out the rear, ie cannot exit under vehicle.
