I am thinking of going to a 4" system, what are the legality issue to be concerned with when removing the resonator and or muffler. In my current location there is no emission checks for registration of the vehicle.

Thanks

David

You shouldnt have to many problems. I run a straight pipe myself. First you might check, SOME states consider turbos to be a form of muffler. Not all are like that. Secondly in doing that let me for warn you of the LOUDNESS of the pipes when they are like that. And if you ever go to stacks it gets really loud. Not that stoped me... LOL :D

Federal law says you can't alter the factory exhaust system, even says it in your owners manual. Never heard of anyone enforcing it though, I wouldn't worry.

You cant alter it,but you can replace it when it gets crushed;) . As long as you have some type of resonator/muffler i thinkyou'd be fine. The noise polution laws say simply you cannto do anything to increase the noise levels. I have 4" with muffler, its got a lowdrone to it at idle, but no ne ever questions it,it looks stock.

David,

I have been running ALL over this state for six years with three different (all strait piped) CTD trucks and have never had a cop look twice (except once and he stopped at a gas station to tell me how much he liked my truck:D)

No worries

Hoss

I have friend with a straight piped Cummiin,he has been straight piped for 2 yrs,he just got a noise polution ticket last week. He;s copied, and framed the ticket,he's proud of it. I dont think he has any intention of"Fixing" the exhaust to comply with the law. :D

I've only had one run in with the law about my noise level. That was back when I had only removed the muffler and resonator from the stock exhaust. When I got on it, the noise was truly obnoxious. The officer let me off with a warning because he couldn't tell me any of the regulations about noise control.

Since getting my 5" exhaust, I've had no problems.

This is for Kalifornia.

How loud is 80db?

Edit: Oops I forgot that the board takes out extra spaces.

I'll bet the semi trucks get away with it because they exit the exhaust up so high. With ours @ ear level, makes it easier to get a ticket, but that's got to be rare.

I sure don't romp on it when a ticket writer is close enough ... falls under the spitting on supermans ego!

A chrome turn down on the end works wonders. ;)

I used to have a weathercap on the end of my tailpipe. It did a pretty good job of redirecting the sound so it wouldn't go straight out. I took it off when I got mobilized and had to move to Camp Pendleton, because with the 5 tons running around, I didn't have to worry about my truck being too loud.

Heard they started harrassing the young kids with the stoopid 5"ers on their hondas and such. Ive had police contact quite a few times. Even with some of the more strict police. Without so much as a peep about the exhaust.

By the way if you get busted in a parking lot doing donuts. You are "practicing controlled slides". Works like a charm for me. Recommends it in the driving manual for the state of AK.
