I started hearing a turbo whistle at full boost on the way home Friday and had been hearing a strange whistle when the exhaust brake was applied for several days before that. Last night my former Dodge dealership mechanic friend who does all my truck maintenance and repair found a failed exhaust manifold gasket. A section between cylinders 2 and 3 had blown out. The exhaust manifold is untouched since the assembly line at Cummins MREP.

I'll be on the phone to Cummins in Amarillo first thing this a. m. to order parts.

My mechanic friend wanted to know if anyone knows of a TSB or uprgrade to exhaust manifold gasket or manifold bolts, lock washers, etc. that we might want to know about before simply replacing the gasket.

Does anyone know of an upgrade that would prevent a future repeat of this problem?

Several differant aftermarket manifolds manufactures out there. I would go that route instead of replacing the factory stuff. Maybe some one will chime in on the differant manufactures and some pics.

The ATS manifold is indeed a high quality upgrade and a wise choice for anyone intending to keep the truck beyond 100k. There are no tsb's on the 3rd gen exhaust. However Cummins does have SS bolts for some applications that would also work on ours.

I was not aware that Cummins had an updated version but my '06 probably has the improved manifold. As far as I can tell before the manifold comes off the manifold is fine, just the gasket has blown out.

I appreciate the good advice but if my manifold is cracked I'll buy another factory Cummins manifold. This one has worked fine for over 200k miles. If it has failed a replacement will probably last another 200k. The factory exhaust manifold on my '01 lasted me 325k miles and is still in use as a work truck with the original in spite of Bosch 275hp injectors and hundreds of steep grades pulled with EGT exceeding 1300 degrees. I am not inclined to replace a Cummins part with any aftermarket vendor's part.
