Okay all you diesel guru's out there, I'm in need of some help again. After shutting my truck off after driving around for awhile(read the engine is sufficiently warm), something under the hood of the truck makes a periodic pinging noise. I do know it's coming from somewhere on the exhaust system as the sound resonates along the entire exhaust pipe. the only thing that I can think of is that the tubing after the elbow after the turbo is cooling at a different rate than the elbow which would cause a differential in the shrinking process, which would ultimately lead to the piping shrinking more quickly than the cast iron of the elbow. Has anyone ever had this happen, and if so, was there anything that can be done to solve the issue? I don't think that anything is getting ruined, but when I park my truck in the attached garage at night, the sound gets kind of annoying as it goes on for about 1/2 to 1 hour.

think maybe it is in the muffler . because if it wasnt wouldnt somthing crack not sure just thinking out loud never noticed it on my 01

Yeah, i don't have a muffler either. Just straight back... Thanks for the references guys. I just wasn't too sure if something was crapping out or not.

Possible cracked exhaust manifold gritting its teeth? My Buddy had one in the "buttcrack" (for lack of better terms) on the underside of his you could barely see.

I haven't looked at mine super close, but I'm quite sure it's not cracked. I would hear it I'd imagine.

Hope so. I never heard mine, but when we flipped it to do the twins we found a big ole crack, going from the bottom of the turbo flange half way around to the top of the other side. It stopped just short of where we could see it easily. I had no idea, never heard a thing. Fortunately I planned on swapping to to an ATS anyway, to support the additional weight of that extra turbo. See pics below.

As far as the noise. Every vehicle makes noise as the exhaust is cooling, even gassers. Each vehicle does it to a different extent (read volume).

Top side, you can see the crack making it's way up to the top, but from the outside of the truck, looking in, you would not see the crack easily:

Used to be when the exhaust system was all black iron that the joints would rut up a little and you had no cool down noise. Now the material is most systems after the manifold/turbo is some type of stainless or aluminized pipe, no rust so the joints make a noise when they cool down, they all do it but I have heard that the Fords are less noticeable since they are frequently at the dealers rather than in the driveway/garage. bg

I Know 2 Tdr Members That Replaced The Exhaust Manifold With A 3 Piece One Thiers Stop Pinging. Mine Is Still Orignal With Over 100000 Miles And It Pings Every Time I Shut Down And I Let It Cool To 300 Deg On Pyro. It Really Plays A Tune When I Shut Down And Temp Is Like -20 T0 -30 Deg. I Have No Cracks That I Can Find. Will Replace With 3 Piece If Mine Cracks.
