Ok guys. . I need help. I'm trying to remove the tail piece of my exhaust and am having no luck. Of course when the exhaust was installed, I used them damn guillatine type clamps. Now how can I remove this piece of pipe so that I can turn it a little bit? I want to angle it up more so that I can cut a piece of it off and install my turn down pipe that has been in my garage for like 6 months. .

I've tried everything from a Hot Torch to trying to pry it off with a chisel and hammer, but nothing is breaking this pipe loose. Any idea? should I just keep using the torch to heat it up enough to where it will bend easy?

Thanks

Don't feel like the Lone Stranger...

I bought a monster tip from Genos and could not get my old BD downturn tip off. I used a propane torch, a hammer and no luck. I didn't beat it up and I didn't wan to cut it off. Guess I'll keep the downturn tip. Already go a buyer for the monster tip.

Kev,

Try a cut-off wheel in a dremel tool or die grinder and cut 2 or 3 slits in the pipe to just past the crimp made by the clamp. Then heat it up red with a torch and pull/wiggle like h*ll. Sometimes you can pound the end of a flat screw driver in there to open things up a bit.

It helps to have a friend who can run the torch while you be the muscle, or vice versa. I did it alone with a come-along, some light chain, and a nylon strap, but it was a pain.

When you re-assemble, get everything just where you want it. Tap the expanded end of the pipe down flat again against the pipe it fits over, then just tack weld it in 2 or 3 places. Then use a stainless steel band clamp (about $21 at my local muffler shop) over the joint. Future R & R is much easier.

Exhaust R & R has been my least-favorite project on this truck until I did the tack weld/band clamp thing.

Good luck,

-Jay

You need to use an oxy-acetylene torch and heat it red hot, it will slide apart easily. I've never had to cut any slits. A pair of large water pump pliers may help though.

ehx. pipe removal?

:D For those of you ahving trouble removing pipe sections, the easiest way that I have found is -soak the joint with WD-40,then take one of the clamps and put around the pipe but only snug it -then you are able to hammer against the saddle part of the clamp with out damaging the pipe -rotate the clamp periodically to get an even hammering. The accumulation of the soot kind of "glues things" together along with the Godzilla who cranked down on the clamps to hard and put a deep crease in the pipe. My $0. 02

Some good ideas already posted. My addition to them: use a section of 2x4 against the clamp that you installed and hammer against the wood, after the pipe nipple is heated red hot.

This got the muffler off my truck with no damage at all.
