Does anyone know how much restriction the resonator in the down pipe on my 245 hp. 2001 makes? I am working to lower the exhaust temperature on my truck when pulling long hills. An article in issue 23 indicated that replacing the muffler with one having a "straight thru" design would be as effective as replacing the exhaust system with a 4" system. Will it be necessary to remove the resonator also?

Has anyone found a source for the "in the fender well" ram air duct shown in issue 34?

Resonator

dj,

When I took the mufler off of my 2000, I looked into the resonator and in was a straight thru design, it looked kind of like a "glass pak" muffler. I just had what looked to be about a 4" pipe with holes in it, so I don't think it would have much restriction. The truck will sound great with just the resonator and a straight pipe where the muffler used to be. My non towing highway EGT's went down about 100 degrees and throttle and turbo response went up.

Just my . 002 worth :D

RESONATOR

my resonator is headed for a new home this w/e--to be put on another member's "undervalved" :D truck. it is straight thru, 4" in diameter, except for the 3" inlet. i suspect you might get a little turbulence in the stream as the exhaust goes through, but no significant restriction.

Jim, I'd like to lower my towing EGT's this way--

when you replaced the muffler with a straight pipe, did you end up with any drone in the cab around 2000 rpm ?

Drone

roadranger,

I have only had it out on the freeway once since I took the muffler off and I was running empty. It seemed to me that the noise level in the cab was about the same at an easy cruise. I did not get the "dreaded" drone that others are talking about. Not sure what will happen when you put a load on it tho... It looks to me like the resonator is just a small muffler, and maybe that will kill the drone. Also, I used flex pipe (thats all we could find on short notice) and that might possibly have something to do with no drone. ( it seems to me I had read here about a piece of flex pipe curing the drone  )

Hope this helps :D

Geno's muffler eliminator pipe

Anyone tried this yet? I see that some have removed the muffler and replaced with flex pipe, have you noticed any MPG difference in addition to the lower EGT's?

Mileage

Joe Mc,

I have not diriven enough miles yet to check mileage figures, but I will post them when I get enough miles to tell.

:D Lost my muffler two weeks ago, my etg is reading lower and it spools up faster, i wish i hadnt of waited so long. Take it off you will like it. Cost 25. 00 at muffler shop. NO DRONE AT ALL... :)

I installed a Geno's muffler eliminator kit last week. It fit great, and sounds really good! No drone at any speed, but it is too early to tell if there is any measurable fuel mileage improvement.

eliminator pipe.

i had one made for my truck, before i went with the full 4" system. i think it could be used again. it was made with the resonator out, also. if some one can use it, PM me. i may have boogered one end up getting it off, but i think it could be used. essentially new 3" pipe with hangers welded on. it was too loud for me, and did drone.

An exhaust system is only as good as it smallest hole.

The inlet of the resinator drops down to 2. 6 inches ID.

A true 3" pipe can only support 250 hp without restriction.

Hope this helps.
