I installed a Pac brake and gauges on my 2006 3500DRW 5. 9 and I noticed that my exhaust temp, before turbo, is running 600 on flat ground and around 1100 on hills empty. I am running a Smarty Jr set on tow, everything else is stock. What should the temp be normally? I haven't even tried to pull my 12K trailer yet, scared that the temps are going to be way to high and cause me major troubles. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated.

600* sounds pretty normal on flat ground. Ive never seen 1100* on any hill running empty on my 2nd gen although Ive heard the 3rd gens do run considerably hotter due to the emissions crap. Im sure others will chime in.

Seems a little high on the hills empty unless you really have your foot on the throttle. I use my EGT to drive with when pulling my Toy Hauler, I can easily run 1400+ on grades. I run a Smarty on level 5 when towing.

I don't run a smarty Jr, have a Bully Dog outlook instead.

I consistently run 600° on flat ground, and may see just shy of 900° empty on hills, or when I'm into the throttle. Not sure if that helps or not? I have never seen anything much over 900° empty on any conditions. Of course "hills" in Virginia could be different than what I see in Michigan.

Sounds pretty normal to me and I run on Catcher 3, the strange thing is it doesn't get much warmer on hills with the trailer. OTOH my TT is only about 8500 lbs total and when climbing the local mountain passes I run 50~55 and can keep it at 1000~1100 degrees.

Apples to oranges..... his truck looks to have no airflow improvements

I went back and check the settings and it was on Towing at 99 or full power so I backed it down to 70 and will try that and get back to the forum with the results. Also I still have stock exhaust, should I up grade to a more open system?

Thanks for all the responses.

Not sure on the emission standards in VA, but when I put my exhaust on (4") I did a turbo back and eliminated the catalytic converter (no emission or vehicle checks in MI). My EGT's dropped about 50*, but I think that was more because of the cat removal than the exhaust.

I noticed no change in anything when put my CAI on, only heard the turbo whine more.

You are right about the cat removal-but not worth it any more. Mark my words it won't be too long before most if not all states have diesel smog programs in place

Well, being in Michigan, with the auto industry (and auto lobby) helps. There is no talk of any emissions checks, and I think it will be a while before they implement anything.

But, I agree with you enough that I kept the cat converter in the event I need to put it back on.

Obama is working on federal standards that meet CA's... . Lets hope he has bigger fish to fry. I removed my CAT and put flanges on it and installer a delete section. Every other year I put the CAT baack in and put the SMARTY back to stock and give CA their donation.

Ok guys, here is some more info after doing a few test runs with different settings.

1. Totally stock - on flat ground 7-8 lbs of boost and exhaust temp prior turbo is 700EGT

Totally stock - Going uphill about a 5% grade 28lbs boost and 1050+ EGT

Totally Stock - Going uphill about a 5% grade 30lbs boost and 1250+ EGT @ WOT

2. Smarty set on towing (99) FULL POWER - on flat ground 10lbs boost and 600 EGT

Smarty set on towing (99) FULL POWER - Going uphill about a 5% grade 30lbs boost and 1050+ EGT

Smarty set on towing (99)FULL POWER - Going uphill about a 5% grade 36+lbs boost and 1100+ EGT @ WOT

Any Thoughts would be appericated

Thanks Cerberusiam, I'll do that soon as I can, we've got snow and ice right now so maybe few days. But I'll post as soon as I have the info.
