Towing With New Mods: Brief Review

I'm pulling about 9000#, '96, 3. 54, auto currently no lockup. I know the "best" would be lockup with exhaust brake but do any of you guys have experience using only lockup on down hills? Maybe just lockup will take care of my needs. I'm also planning on transmission upgrades because I'm at 105,000 miles w/stock transmission.

In the worst hilly part of Southern Oregon, Interstate 5, I've been pretty successful using 2nd with occasional braking. Most of the other sections I get away with 3rd OD off.

I also believe that I do not need an exhaust break to towing my fifth wheel trailer that weights approximately 6000#. I would appreciate recommendations on using torque converter lockups. It is my understanding that the electronic lockup will only work in 3rd. & OD. I believe if lockup is needed in 2nd the transmission valve body must be replaced.

Before I got the DTT upgrades I discovered that I could get engine braking on hills of 6% or less if I topped the hill at the desired speed OD off and in cruise control. If the hill exceeded 6% my 10,000# 5er would cause the truck to accelerate and cruise control wouold onload the transmission. Perhaps with this approach and no lock up your lighter trailers will not push you so hard as mine does.

I had to pull my "home" (16,000+ pound 5er)a short 190 mile relocate distance with a couple of 6% grades, all I did was lock up in (D) and slow down to 45-50 mph before the grade and all it took was a small bit of brakeing to hold that speed, no problems at all, you just have to be careful and it helps to know were the hills are.
