I have read most the post on exhaust systems and had some question.
Is there any performance or mpg advantage to take the resonator and muffler off a totally stock engine?
Is it just for sound effect?
Thanks

Rusty - I just pulled the muffler off of my truck. . and to be honest will you I only gained two things. #1 my turbo seems to spool up faster and #2... when standing out side of the truck, the Exhaust has a deeper pitch to it. No MPG advantage at all. Which is fine with me... the sound makes up for it. LOL

Rusty,

I agree with Kevin. Additionally, your exhaust temps will go down 100-150 degrees at full pull, which is no big deal unless you are Bombed. Also, it sounds real nice, not too loud. Leave the resonator in.

I personally think replacing it with 4" straight exhaust is a waste of money unless you like it real loud or are at nuclear bombing levels.

I saw no evidence of lower EGT's with the straight 3" pipe on my truck. I can get it to 1k degrees pretty quickly, but can not get it over that. My truck is stock except for a K&N filter and the straight pipe. I think that temperature is normal for an unloaded stock truck at full throttle.

After about three months of having the truck straight-piped, (no muff. no res. ). I returned to the muffler shop yesterday to have the resonator put back in. It's getting alot colder in my neck of the woods, and i'm idling alot more. Believe you me, the noise is substantial with only a straight-pipe. With the resonator put back in place it's much quieter, but still "throaty". When starting on a cold morning and letting it idle to warm up, I would hear comments from the neighbors, such as, "wow a 747 is taxing for take-off in the street. " So my advice, LEAVE THE RESONATOR IN-PLACE.

I agree with the "747" sound, but I am keeping my straight pipe, as I have coated the entire exhaust with Rustoleum High Temp paint. I also have found the combo straight pipe and Pacbrake exhaust brake effective at silencing those punks who crank their license-plate rattling stereos at stoplights.

the straight pipes aren't bad for those little people at the stoplights with the cell phones either... #ad

Rusty,
The advantage to a point is lower EGT's. You are able to move the exhaust gases out of the engine quicker resulting in lower EGT's. Now that is if you are not bombed. Bombed you add more fuel+air=heat. I went with a 4" exhaust with a muffler and noticed 150-200 degree drop in my EGT's untill I started bombing, then they went back up.

Jason you are bad, picking on those unsuspecting people at the stop lights, go to your room #ad

OK so if I just want a better sound and possibly better fuel mileage I could get a muffler eliminator kit and leave the resonator in and it would mellow the sound out. Is this true I can see two things under there is one the muffler, and the other the resonator. I don't know alot about this as you can tell. I will listen to all. I plan on doing something this summer before vacation.

Unless you are never satisfied like some of us. I went with the muff removal kit and was in a week later removing the resinator. Same with my injectors, got DDI's thinking "that'll be enough", now I am a heartbeat away from getting the big daddy 3's.

Moral of the story, do it right the first time, go big and get it over with, if not, youll nickel and dime yourself to death trying to achieve what you should have done to start with.

Okie, I've had the eliminater pipe from Geno's on for about a month now. Can't really say anything about mileage because of a lot of variables, but it feels better to me and sounds better. It produces a slight rumble that is not overly loud... . I left the resonator in place. I'm hapy with it.

Neighbors? I have an agreement with my neighbors, they tolerate my dual 4" straight-thru exhaust pipes at 6:00A. M. when I leave for work, and in return I don't kill their cats that trespass in my yard. #ad

I'm running open pipes for the lower EGT's, the sound is just an "extra".

I removed my muffler with genos M/E kit a week ago and I am very pleased. Noticed a 50 RPM increase at idle and smoother at idle. Deffinatly quicker throttle response at low end not to mention the great sound along with the 5" monster tip I installed at the same time. Installation was easy thanks to Geno's. .
