there is a freeze plug on the back of theblock, if it popped out put some red loctite on it and tap it back in with a rubber mallet. if it continues to pop back out, it is a sympton of a bigger problem, probably a head gasket leaking pressure.
There is also a machined billet style plug fix for this. Two configurations exist: one for the Common Rail style and one for the earlier trucks.
My early 2004. 5 was one of the "freeze plug" recall units. Long story short it passed the dealer's recall test procedure when new only to let go about a year ago.
Jeff Garmon's Performance Diesel fixed me right up and installed the billet plate. It's not hard to do but it's easier of the turbo downpipe is removed.
The freeze plug is right above the bell housing on the rear of the block.
I don't think it would be possible to cut a hole in the fire wall. The best time to fix it is when the transmission is out. Other than that it's not going to be a fun job.
