This code P0630 was thrown recently on my 03 CTD, I heard a chime an thought it might have thrown a code an sure enough it was P0630.

I recently had two TSB's done before Thanksgiving day. Am I understanding that the reason the code come up was due to wrong vin info or lack of vin info. Also if they try to reset an it does not except correct vin or lack of vin that the PCM is to be replaced.

Some one explain please

Thanks, Tony

Hrmm. My source shows that as:

P0630 VIN Not Programmed or Incompatible - ECM/PCM

Thanks Matt for the reply, I already had a definition of the code. I guess I should have been more specific.

Looks to me in order to do a flash, VIN would have to be programed, the word "not" does not make sense to me they use. Now I can see a wrong letter or wrong number being entered causing the code to come up. Maybe a simple re-enter of correct VIN will fix this.

Also If I understand this correctly if re-entry of correct Vin is placed an code comes up again the same, a new PCM is to be installed. Is this correct

My concern is truck is running great, an I'm happy with the TSB's performed. Can replacing PCM still give me the great running an good mileage I have now. I was hoping it would not create another problem with mileage issues or something else. Hopefully if it did it would be for increased mileage. Dream on :D

Maybe someone will reply that has had this code come up. Any who I have a appointment with dealership in the morning to get it corrected, I hope.

You've already got the appointment for tomorrow, but one option would have been to do nothing and just wait to see if the code clears on its own. It's possible it was a momentary "burp" in the universe.

Recall that the PDM says to replace the ECM, NOT the PCM (on 2003 trucks these are 2 separate modules... the PCM is under the fusebox and the ECM is bolted to the side of the engine).

Here's an old thread started by Parshal, but he never updated the solution to the code. Here's another by LPChristianson, again he never updated the results.

It's curious why it matters to the ECM whether the VIN is programmed in.

Ryan, You are correct I went back an looked at the attachment an it says ECM. The wife tried to get me to buy those reading glasses the other night an I declined :-laf .

There is no problem with cancelling the appointment at all. Actually I have been waiting a few days to see if it would clear. This afternoon leaving work I hear another chime like the first one I heard last Wed. So I then decided to go straight to dealership to get a appointment. Service writer looking at his computer screen said he never seen that code come up before an that he would have to discuss it with the service tech.

630 (VIN) and 633 (SKIM) came up on my truck after they flashed with the fuel economy TSB. As I understand it, these are natural consequences of a flash, and the dealer is supposed to clear them as a part of their process when they flash your ECM.

I cleared mine with the obd-2.com scanner. yea, it surprised, me that I could do that. In fact, the scanner did NOT even pick up the code (maybe there was no definition for it) but sending the generic clear to the ECM cleared the codes. the only way I knew I had the code was to do the three ignition swith cycles. didn't even set the MIL

Well, if you got another "ding" then the code's recurring... best to take it in. Like DLeno said, they can probably just clear it out for you no problem.

Well as of this afternoon code has been cleared by dealership. Service writer ask me this morning when I droped truck off if any other problems need checked out.

I told him that HVAC controls where acting up, this afternoon when I went by dealership the tech came out, and said I need the TSB done for the defective defrost blend door. Kicker is they did not have the parts to fix blend door an parts needed are on national back order according to the tech. Not for sure when they will receive the parts.

Also ask if high idle feature with cc could be done to my truck, did not talk to tech, but service writer said he did, an my 03 does not have this feature available to enable :{. Though mine might be one of the lucky 03's, must be late 03. 5 models if there is such a feature for 03.

Did they have your dashboard apart? If so, can you get some pics of what it looks like behind there? I'd love to see them...

According to service writer when I called at around three o'clock to see if my truck was ready he said it was still in the shop an tech had dash out at that time. I did notice one panel was not completely snapped in place when I got home. I just pushed againist it an it popped right in place. I'll send them my bill later.

Tech was telling me an service writer about needing the parts for the fix an also replacing servo motor. Apparently he felt it was weak also.

I'm not sure I would be allowed back in the shop area or not, never have ask them. I use to know a couple other guy's that worked there an it was no problem then.

If I happen to be off the day I take it back to have TSB done, I will take my wife's camera with me and see if I can get some pics.

At one point I was a bit surprised at what service writer said to me. We both though truck was going to have to spend the night since dash was out of it. He said well Mr. T let me call Enterprize Rental Car an get you a way home. I've heard some say before on the TDR getting a loaner car was like pulling teeth at some dealerships, a no go. This was before tech came out an said parts not available, an almost had all dash back in,

I have alway's been treated very well at this dealership. McKinney Dodge, McKinney Tx.
