Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Explanation of Killer Dowl Pin (KDP)

I know there's a vault of info on this in the archives, but I can't make the search work for me... .

A friend has just purchased a 97 12v and has plans to install in a yet to be determined truck. I know there's a fix for the KPD, but I'd like a short explanation of why it's a potential problem, where to look, etc. Better to check it now while it's on a stand.
