Exploring garage/shop options - pole barn or not for attached building?

How to clean out gasoline varnish?

Welders - Miller or Lincoln?

Wow, how great to see the dream taking shape. And good job looking busy in the last frame!

Remind me - how thick is the floor? How many cubic yards per truck? What was the total concrete cost (materials only, not labor)?

Sorry - lots of questions because some day I'll be doing this too (God willing).

Thanks, Ryan.

I've been saving/hoping/wishing for something like this for a long time... and it is really good to see it come together.

The front-loading concrete trucks hold ~11yd³ each and there were two of them doing the floor - I'm not sure if both of them were full or not... but they left EMPTY. They wasted literally no concrete at all.

Wholesale price of 'crete is right around $85/yd³ and retail/consumer price is right around $100/yd³.

I've got just shy of $8k in concrete total - sorry - they didn't break it down into labor/materials... just linear feet of foundation/walls and the floor total. I think I had it figured out to be $2. 30/ft² (?) (labor+materials). ... I also figured out that the floor is about 16yd³... but my math could be off.

The floor is 4" thick overall (6" thick where the lift is going), and closer to 10" thick by the doors. There's remesh, fiber, etc. She should hold just fine.

nice pics. . I Yearn for a Good Garage . . ha. . speaking of which. . Today while nursing a minor migraine chilling inside on my day off. I heard a Bang out side. . and my 40' long 14' high temporary garage decided to try and fly . .

It landed in my neighbors yard and just missed his house by less then a foot. . needless to say I was #@$%! haha. I took it apart and stored it and my migraine got worst. . oh well I would love a real garage, some day, I will have one. . for now insulated coveralls willhave to do as my truck doesn't fit in my 2 car garage  hahaha

Matt, I only see enough room to fit the TDI's and your truck in there but not room for a skidsteer and a seperate lift bay. Looks like you will be adding on sometime in the future.

Ye of little faith. :)

The building is 32' deep and 40' wide. That's 4 bays each at ~10'. 99% of the time, the Dodge will be just sitting in there stuffed away behind other junk. The skidsteer can chill out in front of the Dodge - or I can park in in the workbay and move it out when I have to.

Remember - this is just the garage.

I have some new pics to share... construction started last week... and it's already almost done!

The crew I hired is nothing short of amazing to say the least.

  • All the walls were up on the first day (my father-in-law and I helped them raise the walls... )
  • 40' (4:12 pitch) trusses were raised by hand
  • Only three guys on the crew
  • Their attention to detail is unlike anything I've ever seen
  • Very little waste on the materials
  • By the 4th day - the entire roof was sheathed, covered with felt and ice/water barrier (6' strip on either side)

The pics are kinda self explanatory...

At this rate, I'll be turning wrenches in there soon!

Matt

Soon enough you will be able to move into your new home, and leave the wife in hers:-laf:-laf

Looking nice, keep the pictures flowing.

Thanks, guys!

I'm really psyched about the progress they've made in such a short amount of time. I've already asked them to come back and reside the house this spring. With the new garage - the house is looking really dumpy by comparison. Once everything's all the same color - it will look really nice.

I hadn't thought of hiring them to do the boiler shed... I figured that was a small enough project for me to do on my own... very good idea, though Scott!

On Friday - they put up the Typar, hung all the windows, started the brick molding/trim around the doors and got about 40% of the siding done.

They'll be done either by the end of today or tomorrow - then I get to wrestle with the overhead doors to seal 'er up. Once she's all sealed up - the wiring, drywall, etc. can begin.

Matt

Thanks, Travis. It all turned out better than I thought it would. All the tireless planning and agonizing over the details paid dividends.

I had a decent little garage - but sold the house with it. This place is much better... gotta get you out this way for a beer sometime, Gene.

Pics from yesterday - exterior is done except for the overhead doors. (They finished last Tuesday afternoon. )

I was too busy/excited on the 1st day, but starting on the 2nd day of construction I zip-tied an infrared motion activated, 4-megapixel digital game camera to the corn crib and let it take pictures. These images (over 1000) were then strung together using Windows Movie Maker to form the 2-minute video.

Time lapse video of my garage construction project - Putfile.com

(On edit: I replaced the batteries on the morning of the 14th - so the timestamp is off for the last two days. )

Putfile appears to have chopped off the last few seconds of the video. Nice.
