Extended warranty for used 2017

I’m browsing the market for a DRW to carry a slide in camper. I’m not sure about the new trucks with the CP4 pump and actually like the looks of the older ones better.
I found a nice truck locally owned by a retired Fireman selling the truck, toyhauler and ATV. Coincidentally, by buddy bought his Toyhauler and said he took great care of his equipment.
The truck is a 17 Ram 3500 CC DRW 4x4 Aisin 4:10 set up exactly how I would order one. It looks brand new with only 12k mi and the price is fair.
My concern is the 36 mo warranty is probably over soon.
What would be the best option for and an extended warranty. I understand the Mopar Max Care seems the best.
What would be the best place to buy it, how long of a warranty period could I get and any idea of the cost?
I’m assuming because of the year and the Factory warranty is about over, it will probably cost more than if purchased earlier in the vehicle life.
Or, take a gamble and not get a warranty.
Also, how are the 19s doing for reliability?
 
Ziegler has the factory max care at fair prices. I wouldn't own a diesel w/o. Go for the 8/125, its what I got on our 18 2500.

I got the max care 8/125 too on my 18 3500. Bought it online for way less then the dealer wanted. Dealer couldn't touch the price and said go for it. I used the hell out of the Chrysler max care on my 07.

One should consider how many miles they drive. I bought the ZERO deductible 7/100k. I am at 72k at 5 years so two more years and 28k should work out just fine.
 
I got it included in the deal for the 2500, I bought it for the ED. I think 2300 in 2015 for a 8/120.
 
I wish i had bought extra coverage with all the issues ive had with my truck. Even when it was under the factory power train warranty it was amazing once an issue came up so did all the fine print on what was what and who had to pay up. Rarely was it dodge. They cover this but not that. And of course thats what failed never the this that was covered. I only got 104k on my truck and now the valve body has to be replaced. Any extra coverage you can get in my opinion is worth it. Buying 6 new ram chrysler jeep products new from the same dealer over a 10 year period didn't hold much sway. Get all the coverage you can
 
In a diesel, the base warranty leaves a lot uncovered regarding emission components. Add in trip interruption, towing, and car rental and the cost seems to look a bit more reasonable. With tech shortages and parts availability it not uncommon to be out 2 or more weeks for completion. Many dealers are scheduling 3 weeks out. We just went through this story in October. So yes, its a big dollar throw of the dice. BUT.
Peace of mind...... Priceless.
 
So honest question, because I’m in the same boat looking at late 4th gen trucks that may or may not be per their 3year 36k warranty: what big ticket items are you guys concerned about that the extended warranty would cover?

from what I have researched, most/all emission devices are NOT covered, and that would be my biggest concern. Are their other expensive parts prone to failure that could justify the cost of an extended warranty?

As a side note, I’ve ran some VINs for warranty for trucks outside of 36k and HOLY $&IT is freaking expensive
 
EGR cooler. Turbo actuator. Def system.DPF. Its a minefield and the fine print is scary. Max care is very comprehensive, Ram dealers have it in the system. User friendly. We just cashed a 1k trip interruption from late October. Covered hotels,food etc, have to be 150 miles from home.

So I guess that's where my confusion sets in. After reading or trying to read the fine print on MaxCare warranties and just generic google searching, DPF, EGR, DEF (can't confirm) aren't covered. The actuator would appear to be covered, but the repair/replace cost is nowhere near the cost of the warranties I am pricing out. I can see rental, hotel, food coverage does have its benefits. If I am completely wrong and that emissions stuff IS covered, then it's a no-brainer as it'll probably cover warranty cost.

However, as of now, I wonder why not just save my $$$ put some aside for inevitable repairs and not fork over $2k-$4k right away that you may/may not need. I know, it's a crap-shoot. And as you can probably tell, I'm see-sawing between options. So I do appreciate any and all feedback from you guys.

Engine, trans, axles, transfer, computers, modules, wiring harnesses, suspension, etc. Like said, some emissions items are covered as well. The factory radio is covered. Download the max care booklet, it lists all the common parts that are covered.
Warranties aren't everyone's cup of tea. You are either for it or not. If you can keep 10k laying around for major or catastrophic repairs you're good. But if your engine is toasted, that 2800.00 max care warranty is much cheaper than a out of pocket engine replacement. But like I said, insurance/warranties isn't for everyone. Some ppl don't even buy car insurance.

Modern diesel? I won't own one w/o. The surprises are to scary for me.

I only buy the manufacturer Chrysler max care warranties. I would never buy any aftermarket warranties for anything.

So a new twist on these FCA warranties. Got a CEL a couple times so dealer (Rairdon in Monroe, WA) read code, something to do with turbo, 74,000 mikes, left truck with them. Next day tells me its the actuator. Sounds right, fix it, Maxcare should cover. Well, its not that easy. They have to send an "inspector" to check it and give green light. OooooK. Inspector looks yesterday. Great, will leave truck there so you can fix. Uh, no, he has to go have a meeting now and they will maybe green light in 3 or 4 days. Well what the fork! Are you not a RAM dealer? You can't decide on your own? Well I got the feeling the unscrupulous dealers out there have been milking warranties or something. Service writer (who is very knowledgeable and seems honest) said now they have to have anything over $200 approved in advance. Is this nationwide? Or just dealers identified by some "cheating algorithm"? Wasting a LOT of my time as well as shop time, lots of phone calls and driving truck back and forth. The kicker is parts are in stock and it could have easily been fixed by now. Have to take it back next week.
