Gitchesum is a New Daddy today!!!

Hitting the road...Alaska to Texas

I have a Dodge 2007 2500 5. 9 SLT Diesel with 37000 miles and have had several request to purchase extended warranty insurance. The one from Dodge is Added Care Plus 7yrs 100K calculated for existing mileage to 5 years 63 K for $2,520. 00. This covers A few additional engine componets above the 100 K that is in place, traney, rear wheel drive, steering, air, engine cooling and fuel, front and rear suspenision, instrumation, electrical, brakes, antilock brakes, expanded electrical, power group, and luxury group. covers 800 componets. I'll be towing approx 8,500lb 5th wheel.

My question. Is it worth it to purchase this insurance? Sure would like your input. Thank you. Herb

Generally speaking an extended warranty only benefits the seller. Most people never use them. However, one major repair can make the initial cost a good investment, but they're really designed as a money maker for the dealer.

Does it cover parts & labor? Are major components failures replaced with new or rebuilt/junkyard cores? I guess the fine print makes a big difference. Try to get them to drop the price if you're seriously considering a purchase. Also make sure you can use it at any dealer in the country.

Firstly, please do make SURE that you are buying a warranty from Chrysler, and NOT some independent insurance company!!! MANY if the phone calls that come in are from commission based insurance salesman who do NOT represent Chrysler.

Secondly, if you are going to be buying a warranty from Chrysler, I would recommend ONLY buying the MaxCare Warranty, which covers almost ALL parts of your vehicle, except, of course, wear items like clutches and brake rotors. Don't take my word for it, make sure you get a pamphlet that describes the parts covered BEFORE you buy the policy. ANY dealer should be able to get you a copy of the MaxCare warranty pamphlet.

The problem with buying any policy less then the MaxCare is that when something breaks, more then likely it will not be covered.

Thirdly, consider buying your warranty from Diane at Topor Dodge Motors at 413-594-4723. I have NOTHING to do with Diane or Topor, but followed advice from members here, and got as good as deal as possible for my warranty, with excellent explanations AND customer service.

LASTLY, know that while you may or may not get your money back out of your extended warranty, when Dodge fixes something for you, you are essentially going to be replacing poorly designed or manufactured parts with new parts that are still poorly designed and/or manufactured (i. e HVAC doors, wheel bearings, ball joints, u joints, track bars etc. )

While I am overall happy with my extended warranty, and it has just paid for itself, with 2 years and 50k more to go, I sometimes still wonder if I would have been better off keeping the $2000 which I spent on it and invested that in upgraded parts, like the Carli ball joints, and Dyna trac hubs those parts when bad on my truck. It IS something to consider, because eventually when those parts fail AFTER the MaxCare warranty runs out, and they SURELY will, I will still be stuck with the cost of replacing them, either with more poorly designed parts, or upgraded parts that I will NOT have to replace again.

Good Luck,Hope this helps. Let us know what you decide to do. There are also other threads out there with more opinions on extended warranties.

Thanks Ken, Seafish, and D Bently for your excellent advice. I'll certainly take it into consideration and it looks to me at this point the best is to not go with the extended warranty. HerbN
